Re-‘Writing’ and Reconstructing History of Tripura through Image-Text-Culture Representation: An Analysis of Comicbook Senapati Ray Kachag
Gupta, Archita
Literature Studies
Image-Text-Culture Representation, History of Tripura
This paper attempts to analyze comic book Senapati Ray Kachag based on the fifteenth century chivalrous Reang General of King Dhanyamanikya, as a comprehensive document recording Tripura’s historical and geographical facts, history of art and culture through image and text. It presents a non-conventional and non- canonical history of Tripura. In the course of this paper attempts will also be made to explore the populist appeal of visual texts evidenced by the existing academic pedagogy of comprehending History through story boards. In comic book mould the historical legend of Tripura, Ray Kachag and his story find an alternative expression using myth, folk-lore, folk life and culture as its ingredients and reconstructs history concerning oral historical traces defying monolithic ‘writing’ .The inclusion of Jamichalang, a folk hero of Tripura is interesting as he eludes and deludes any historical traces. He is a historical as he denies age and time by resisting the prime determiner of canonical and conventional historical documentation viz. chronology. This paper explores this visual text as an interdisciplinary field of study linking history, culture and literature expanding the frontier of knowledge in the discipline of history. History is always accompanied with some obscurity and half-visibility, and this obscurity in fact, facilitates the canonical history formation that involves the politics of inclusion or exclusion. . Adapting the comic book medium, the writer –illustrator of Senapati Ray Kachag Alak Dasgupta presents a blending of fact and fiction, humour and history. The list of books in acknowledgement section is documented, conventional and canonical history written more or less from the perspective of royalty of Tripura. To consider Senapati Ray Kachag a conventional history or legend would be erroneous as no attempt has been made to situate him in such way so far. This paper thus aims to enforce the idea of folk culture and life of Tripura forming a distinct thematic perspective, reconstructing history tracing the presence of a culture integral to historical process but absent in conventional and canonical history.

PANTHIBHOJANAM: A Story of Adaptation
Joseph, Anjana Treesa
English Literature
Literature, English, Adaptation
Adaptation, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, has a plurality of meanings and applications, but mostly alludes to the process of changing to suit an alternative purpose, function, or environment; i.e., the alteration of one thing to suit another. Adaptations are not new to our times. Shakespeare transferred the history of his culture from page to stage. Aeschylus, Racine, Goethe are all known to have done the same, retelling the old familiar stories to a new audience, using a new medium. Adaptations are a big part of the Western culture that they seem to affirm Walter Benjamin’s saying that “storytelling is always the art of retelling stories”. Here, I am attempting a reading of Panthibhojanam, a Malayalam short story by Santhosh Aechikanam, from the collection Komala, first published in 2006, and later adapted into a short film of the same title, by Sreebala K Menon. The story takes us through the mindscape of five young advocates (four women and a man).

Influencing Factors and Improvement Strategies for Rural Teachers’ Subjective Well-being: A Contemporary Analysis

Education
Rural teachers, subjective well-being, influencing factors, promotion strategies
Teacher well-being is not only an endogenous source of motivation to promote teachers’ professional development, but also an important goal to be pursued by teachers, and a major factor determining the quality of rural education. Based on the existing literature, this paper distils the influencing factors of rural teachers’ subjective well-being and explores the interaction mechanism among them, from strengthening the balancing role of the government, playing the supporting role of the society, enhancing the strengthening role of the school, and calling for the strengthening role of the school. We propose rationalized suggestions in terms of strengthening the balancing role of the government, bringing into play the supporting role of society, enhancing the strengthening role of schools, and awakening the dynamic role of rural teachers themselves.

body language, facial expression, semiotic analysis, Glorious Quran
This paper investigates body language expressions used in the Glorious Quran as a non-verbal means of communication and it is verbally expressed. It refers to emotions, feelings and intentions expressed by the positioning of the body in different ways, gestures, eye movement and facial expressions. The main goal of this paper is to examine the body language expressions namely facial expressions used in selected Quranic verses semiotically. Therefore, this paper employs Peirce’s theory of semiotics to interpret and analyze the facial expressions with reference to two kinds of people mentioned in the Glorious Quran: the people in the earthly world and the Hereafter. The findings reveal that the facial expressions in the selected Quranic verses provide a precise understanding to the inner feelings which may not be attained verbally. In addition, the emotion expressions range from full-face (darkened and whitened faces) to expressions that are partial-face movements. However, the most influential facial expressions are the emotions of the people of Hereafter.

Cognitive development, studentship skills, learning concepts, child development
Cognitive development alludes to the understudy's comprehension of ideas and the capacity to think and reason. While dialect invigorates intellectual advancement, dialect complexity impacts subjective capacities. The capacity to cooperate with others while utilizing dialect offers understudies some assistance with developing psychological aptitudes. Understudies who are hard of hearing or deaf have the same ability for intellectual improvement as do understudies with ordinary hearing.

An Exploratory Study of Personification and Hyperbole in Selected Siswati Poetry
Thwala, Jozi Joseph
Language & Literature
Ironic effect, mental association, modes of discourse, technical prowess, rhetorical devices
This is an exploratory study of two selected figure of speech: personification and hyperbole. They are, however, selected as key rhetoric devices that depict the poetic language and style. They are central figures of speech that are significant in the poetic sentences and semantic content. This study is guided by Formalism approach based on poetic sounds, syntactic and semantic construction. They are used to achieve a special meaning or effect in all modes of discourse. They are integral to the functioning of language in a connotative manner. These figures of speech extend the meaning of words or phrases beyond the normal way as a result of mental association. Their functions are for the emphasis on ironic effect and animation. The formalist approach is adopted because it helps the readers to analyse the writer’s technical prowess and craft skills. It believes that in any work of art such as poetry, the poetic sometimes deliberately defamiliarizes the raw material and objects of familiar actions and words that he uses to build up his poem.

Pollution and Other Dimensions of Non-Renewable Groundwater in Haryana (India)
Rahi, Avtar Singh
Environment Management
Groundwater, Stress, Industrial, Pollution, Contamination, Resource, Depleting, Problem, Drinking, Effects, Community, Investment, Water-based, Health
The vital role groundwater plays as a decentralized source of drinking water for millions rural and urban families cannot be overstated. In India, where groundwater is used intensively for irrigation and industrial purposes, a variety of land and water-based human activities are causing pollution of this precious resource. There are no estimates of the public health consequences of groundwater pollution as it involves methodological complexities and logistical problems. The groundwater behavior in the Indian sub-continent is highly complicated due to the occurrence of diversified geological formations with considerable litho-logical and chronological variations, complex tectonic framework, climato-logical dissimilarities and various hydro-chemical conditions. Once contamination starts, very little can be done to check it except a total ban on pumping. But this is very difficult, as millions of rural families in India depend on groundwater for sustaining irrigated agriculture and livelihoods. Manufacturing and service industries have high demands for cooling water, processing water and water for cleaning purposes. Groundwater pollution occurs when used water is returned to the hydrological cycle. Haryana is fast emerging as one of the most favoured investment destinations in India. The State has taken lead in terms of planned industrial and urban growth compared to neighboring States, which has resulted in development of vibrant urban and industrial complexes. They dump the wastes in the rivers which results in water pollution. Management of groundwater resources in the Indian context is an extremely complex proposition as it deals with the interactions between the human society and the physical environment. Unplanned depletion of non-renewable groundwater reserves can undermine and potentially erode the economic and social vitality of any community. Hence, there is need to plan the exploitation of non-renewable groundwater resources and guide their utilization with a view to making communities better prepared socio-economically to cope with increasing water stress as aquifer storage is depleted.

Since, Commerce stream is now being widely recognized, accepted and appreciated therefore, achievement in Commerce has become significant and its formal base generally starts with the higher secondary level of education in India. The present study is an attempt to develop and standardize a Commerce Achievement Test (CAT) for the students of higher secondary level to measure students’ achievement in commerce. CAT contains seventy objective type (with multiple choice) items related to commerce subject and these items are based on syllabus of Higher Secondary Level prescribed by U. P. board, Allahabad. Validity as well as reliability of the test has been ascertained. Split-half and Kudar-Richardson Reliability of CAT have been found to be 0.93 and 0.86 respectively. The face validity has been established with the help of experts from the field of commerce and education. Concurrent validity of the test has been established against marks obtained by students in their Pre – Board Examination and it is 0.63. CAT can be administered in group setting and time-limit to finish CAT is one hour. Responses from the examinee could be taken on a separate answer-sheet. A score of ‘One’ is awarded for every correct answer and ‘Zero’ is given for wrong answers.

Implementation of Internship in 2 Year B.Ed. Course – A Challenge or Routine Task

B.Ed. Course curriculum, Course designing, academic internship
In the recent years all over India there has been a drastic change in B.Ed. course. The switch over to one year course to two year B.Ed. course is quite interesting and challenging task. Any teacher education course seeks to train teacher having requisite teaching skills. Practicum approach adopted in the modern teacher education course is to place a student teacher in a classroom situation under the supervision of a qualified teacher. The concept of Internship introduced in the two year B.Ed. course throughout the country is quite challenging one for all the teacher education institutions. The aim of internship program is to incorporate teaching skills among the student teachers. Internship program is an effective way to give training to the student-teachers about real world of work. It give them an opportunity to integrate theory and practice, plan and deliver lessons properly, critically analyze their own and peers teaching styles and improve them in the light of feedback given by supervisors. Through this program they understand the role and responsibilities of professional teachers. Internship program also give them opportunity to understand different aspects of school program and improve their skills and abilities in teaching profession. An effective and improved internship program is required in developing student-teachers personalities as true professionals in field of education.

Style and Sense in William Faulkner's A Rose for Emily
Qing, Zhao
Language Studies
A Rose for Emily; Style; Sense
A Rose for Emily is a typical Gothic-style novel, intimately associated with the characteristics of Gothic literature: 1. Ghostly and horrible environment; 2. The tone of death; 3. Uncanny character images. Generally speaking, Gothic literature reveals the gloomy, dark, sad and mysterious literary styles, but what fascinates us most is the creation of atmosphere—being horrific, thrilling and intensive, which give people different kinds of sensory touches—Visually, physically and even spiritually. This Gothic style places emphasis on both emotion and a pleasurable kind of terror, thus embodying the senses of a quest for a horrible atmosphere, and an appreciation of the joys of extreme emotion as well as the thrills of fearfulness to readers.

Tang poetry translation; Harmony-Guided Three-Level Poetry Translation Criteria; ‘Invitation to Wine'; Li Bai.
There are many English versions of poems on the market with different styles, but the quality of the translated poems is quite different. This paper mainly makes a comparative analysis of English translations of Li Bai's "Invitation to Wine" by using Dr Wang Feng's "Harmony-Guided Three-Level Poetry Translation Criteria" and concludes that when translating poems into English, we should not only achieve harmony at the macro level, and the similar style and artistic conception at the meso-level, but pay attention to the representation of various beauties at the micro-level. Through the analysis, the authors hope to verify the guiding role of "Harmony-Guided Three-Level Poetry Translation Criteria" in poetry translation and promote the English translation of Chinese poetry.

Education, quality education, teaching, instructions
Most engineering students today lack content in their subjects (technical & non-technical) and are unable to perform in the job place because of their haziness. Reports say that a majority of the engineering graduates in our nation find themselves extremely difficult to seek employment opportunities. These Engineering graduates lack content along with required skills for right employment. To improve the content and confidence, there exists a need for integrating quality into the technical education system especially in the English language laboratory because every aspect of employment process includes good communication skills. Laboratory is the only platform where a student can learn and improve many things within the academic schedule. The statistics of the AICTE reveals the facts that, with over 3,000 colleges in the nation churning out 14 lakh graduates annually, there tends to occur a dip in quality that can be overcome only with the parallel increase of facilities amongst other factors. To bring about well-rounded graduates with the right technical and language competence, colleges must adopt student-centered method of learning which should aim at developing learner autonomy and independence.

In this way, training ought to frame part of the arrangements proposed from the COP. The fruition of more elevated amounts of instruction does not naturally interpret into more mindful conduct towards the earth. Be that as it may, as the persuasive Stern Review on environmental change noted: 'Instructing those as of now at school about environmental change will shape and manage future approach making, and an expansive open and worldwide level headed discussion will bolster today's strategy producers in making solid move now'.

Anxiety, Anxiety Level, Breakfast, Students
Breakfast as the most significant meal of the day is needed for the students to take before going to school. However, some students are skipping their breakfast and their body responses to this eating behavior remain unclear. This study examined students’ anxiety levels in school as a response after taking and not taking breakfast before going to school. Students are examined and there are students who eat breakfast and students who do not eat breakfast before going to school. Then, each student is given a test that measures their school anxiety level in the morning. Using weighted mean, students who eat breakfast got an overall weighted mean of which is interpreted as a disagreement of being anxious in school. On the other hand, Students who did not eat their breakfast got an overall weighted mean of which is also interpreted to disagree with being anxious. Also, it was found out that both students who eat breakfast and who don’t eat breakfast got midlevel of anxiety. Then, the ANOVA analysis resulted in a significance which is higher than the alpha. Therefore, there is no significant association between the anxiety level of the students who take breakfast and who do not take breakfast. In addition, students both taking breakfast or not taking breakfast do have a normal level of anxiety and breakfast can’t give any effects to their anxiety level at all.

The past few decades have witnessed the hot discussion concerning language and gender from various aspects, with the use of stance markers as one of the most vital angles. To find out the gender similarities and differences in the use of stance markers under the classification by Hyland, figure out the gender features and summarize the behind reasons, this article combines the qualitative and quantitative analysis together, conducts a detailed analysis on twenty TED speeches delivered by ten male and ten female lecturers, respectively. Finally, the study finds that firstly, there are no distinctive differences in the use of stance markers in the primary class proposed by Hyland named hedges, boosters, attitude markers and self-mention. But the female lecturers use stance makers more frequently on the whole. Secondly, in terms of secondary class which complemented by other scholars, still no obvious differences are found in terms of hedges and attitude markers. Then, for the use of boosters, the males prefer fact-asserting while the females tend to use certainty-indicating. As for the employment of self-mention markers, words indicating authority such as I are more frequently used by males and those contributing to solidarity between the speaker and audience such as we are more commonly applied by females. The discovery of gender similarities and differences involves various reasons, and it provides important implications for the study of oral English.

Portuguese, English East India Company, Fort St. George Madras, Seventeenth Century
This article mainly emphases with the Portuguese migrants at Fort St. George Madras and the policy of the English in containing the problem posed by the migration. Moreover, it also points out the reasons for the growth of Fort St. George Madras, particularly after the fall of San Thome and Nagapattinam and the attendant English response to the Portuguese migrants in Fort St. George Madras. For instance, the English encouraged and welcome the Portuguese migrants to settle in Fort St. George Madras, because the latter were proficient in trade owing to their familiarity with the region and local vernacular. The Portuguese were already settled in the sixteenth century before the English arrived. They knew the local language and all usual ways of expediting business in the region; they were ideal supervisors, as soldiers, as translators, as brokers, in fact as intermediaries for all the range of activities that are useful in establishing and operating a fortified trading post in the midst of a strange landscape. They were indispensible for the newly arrived English Company to establish a trading post. The English skilfully took advantage of these settlers that culminate as one of the success to foothold as a major competitor post in the century to come.

A Review of the Research on the Evaluation of High School English Writing Portfolio

Education
high school English writing, portfolio assessment, research review
Teaching writing has always been an important part of high school English teaching, and improving students' writing ability has always been a challenge for teachers. Traditional writing teaching focuses too much on the results of writing and neglects the process of reflection and summary after writing. Recent changes to the English college entrance examination have focused on flexibility and innovation in writing, and new questions such as reading followed by writing have appeared one after another in the provincial entrance examination. Portfolio assessment has been used as one of the main tools of formative assessment and has been used in foreign language writing teaching at home and abroad. It has also been a guiding factor for the reforms in the new English writing teaching in high school. The purpose of this paper is to review & analyse the research on the use of portfolio assessment in foreign language writing by scholars at home and abroad through literature collection and see what the current situation is in China and give new ideas for future research on the use of portfolio assessment in high school foreign language writing.

Love for the rails; Paul Theroux’s Travelogues
Mathews, Neema Susan
Literature Studies
Travel, trains, social observation, cultural study
In Paul Theroux’s writings railways do not just provide a background or a theme, but become a functional and structural part of their plot and narration. For Theroux railways offer a cross section of a society. The references in his writings are interesting findings in cultural study. The co-travellers create a temporary cultural aura in the compartment. When the narrator involves in conversation with the co-passengers, he acts as a mediator between the readers and the native. A train is both mobile and stationary at the same time. It is mobile for it takes passengers one place to another, at the same time it offers the traveller a stable platform to observe and socialise. Stating the insignificance of destinations, Theroux invites attention to the ‘being in a train’ experience.

Under-Funding Tertiary Education in Nigeria: Implication for Sustainable National Development
Onuma, Nwite
Education Management
Budget Allocation, Current Government Expenditure, Capital Government Expenditure, Educational Growth, Tertiary Institution, Gross Domestic Product
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of government underfunding of tertiary education for sustainable national development in Nigeria. Three research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The instrument for data collection was a secondary data from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) entitled “Value of Educational Growth, Gross Domestic Product, Capital Government Expenditure and Recurrent Government Expenditure in Nigeria, 1990-2013”. The period under-review was chosen for the purpose of comparing funding of education in selected World Bank sampled countries. The researcher adopted Ex-post Facto research design to evaluate government budgetary allocation to education and value of educational growth between 1990 to 2013. Correlation Martric and Square Regression (r2) and t-ratio statistics were used to analyze data collected. The findings showed that the value of educational growth, Gross Domestic Product, Current Government Expenditure and Regression Government Expenditure maintained increased trend and there was a positive relationship with a low productive value on education budget. This showed that expenditure on tertiary education is still below other countries under-review and below UNESCO recommended of 26% of total annual budgetary allocation. This has affected education development and programs of tertiary education in Nigeria. There is need for improved budgetary allocation to education in Nigeria to match other developing countries of Africa for greater attention to tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The study recommends that educational administrators and management of tertiary institutions in Nigeria should mount pressure on the political class to address the state of under-funding of education by government and implement UNESCO recommended 26% of annual budgetary allocation for suitable educational development.

Teaching-Learning Approaches and Strategies in Peace Education
Subramanian, Dr. A.
Education
Peace education, Role play, Problem-solving, Brainstorming
The “how” is as “important” as the “what”. Hence, the teaching-learning approaches that are compatible with the goals of peace education are holistic, participatory, cooperative, experiential and humanist. Holistic education does not confine itself to the parameters of facts and concepts. Instead, it promotes cognitive, affective and behavioural goals of learning. Often, the focus of learning is the transmission of concepts. In peace education, the goals are three-fold. First is the building of awareness on the realities, roots and consequences of violence, and the building of awareness on the roots of peace. Second is the building of concern and the development of the values of empathy, compassion, hope and social responsibility. In 2003, Harris and Morrison call it the development of moral sensitivity culminating in the building of the capacity of learners to care for others. Third is the call to action beginning with the resolve to change personal mindsets and attitudes and doing something concrete about situations of violence. Participatory education means allowing learners to inquire, share and collaborate. It allows learners to engage in dialogue with the teacher or with their co-learners. The practice of articulating and listening to diverse points of view is an important exercise in broadening perspectives. Such a skill is necessary in a world where many conflicts remain unresolved because of peoples’ refusal to hear one another. In participatory learning, teacher acts more as a facilitator rather than an authority figure. Even if teachers have definite stands on issues, they should encourage students to articulate their own perspectives before inviting them to take appropriate action on the issues discussed (Mcginnis, 1984). Participatory education also means veering away from the traditional indoctrination style. The observance of democratic processes in the classrooms can contribute to the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for democratic citizenship (Harris and Morrison, 2003). Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow are proponents of a type of education that is humanist. A humanist classroom emphasizes the social, personal and affective growth of the learners. In a humanistic classroom, individuals are accepted for what they are. It develops the notions of the self to promote a sense of self-esteem. It sends the message that all are valuable and gifted. Mcginnis (1984) says that “without a positive self-concept or self-image, no one takes a stand, ‘goes public’, or works for change”. He also posits that the more aware we are of our giftedness, the more willing we become to share our gifts with others. Teachers in a humanist classroom are empathetic and affirming. They show interest and concern for the well-being of their students. They encourage in the classroom care and respect for each other. They also encourage sensitivity to diversity in the classroom. Such approach will help breed in learners the seeds of love and compassion- values that are necessary in building a peaceable society.

How the new technologies can be used to assist the language learning and which innovative applications are helpful to meet the continuously increasing demands of learners is the focus of this study. New technologies including overhead projectors, interactive whiteboards, computers and wireless internet have opened up the classroom to the outside world. The teaching-learning process has to adapt to changing learning contexts. Technology provides a learner independent in language learning. Thus, technology enables the learner’s efforts easier and faster. At present, there are several online services and some of them are free. It is possible that many more services will be available in future.

Home Environment and Academic Self-Concept as Predictors of Career Maturity
Alam, Md. Mahmood
Education Management
Home Environment, Academic Self- Concept, Career Maturity, Adolescents
The present study was conducted to investigate home environment and academic self- concept as predictors of career maturity among adolescents. Descriptive survey method of research was used for collecting the data using Home Environment Scale by Sarla Java and Academic Self Concept Scale (ASCS) by Reynolds et al. (1980). A representative sample of 400 (200 boys and 200 girls) Xth class students was drawn from schools located in the Hyderabad city using simple random sampling technique. Descriptive, correlational and inferential statistics were used to compute correlations and to compare the means between the groups. Findings of the study revealed that (1) there is significant relationship between home environment, academic self-concept and career maturity of students. (2) there is significant difference between boys & girls and rural & urban in respect of their home environment, academic self- concept and career maturity and (3) there is significant difference between rural and urban students in respect of their home environment and career maturity, however insignificant difference is found in case of rural and urban on the measure of academic self- concept. The above analysis suggests that career development of adolescents should be taken as a challenge not only by the adolescents themselves but also by educationists, psychologists and administrators to develop maturity in career decision and goal selection. They should be guided and trained to make congruence between career behaviour and his expected behaviour at that age. Lesser is the gap between the two greater is the maturity in the individuals’ career.

Education Management
Designation, Job satisfaction, Experience, University, Academics
Institutions of higher learning, universities in particular recognise staffing as a vital part of the management process to ensure the success of universities and the education sector as a whole. The education sector is responsible for developing a sustainable pool of highly trained, skilled and competent human resource capital, and universities are charged with the provision of relevant quality education and ought to foster national cohesion and integration. In fulfilling this mandate however, it is important to have job satisfaction guarantees through correct placements for academics which will ensure committed and stable workforce. It is the aim of this paper to find out the influence that designation and experience of academics’ has on their job satisfaction. The study targeted chartered public and private universities in the Rift Valley Region (RVR), Kenya. The study population consisted of university management, deans and lecturers from the selected universities. The study employed convergent parallel mixed methods design with random and systematic sampling techniques to select the respondents. Purposive sampling was also used to select information-rich cases. Data collection instruments were questionnaires, interview guides and document analysis guide. Analysis was done using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient and t-test, One-way Analysis of Variance and regression coefficients. It was established that the dons with the most experience were highly satisfied in their job. Job designation was a significant determinant on perceived job satisfaction levels among the academic staff with the professors demonstrating the highest job satisfaction.

Vivekananda’s View on Uplift of the Subalturn

Many great hermits throughout the ages have come of on the holy land of India. Swami Vivekananda is one of those who are especially notable in the field of eco-social, religious and history. He was born in a generous aristocratic “Kayastha” family in North Kolkata. From childhood Vivekananda was very gentle. He easily realizes the circumstances of dependent India. He gets the impression of India and its dignity in the history of mankind; the causes for that position and also whether it is necessary to change – where to start and what is the way. The main streams to culture history in India are – analyzing the relevant objects in traditional way, imperialist attitude, nationalist policy and recently the culture of lower classes history that begins in 1970s. The historians named Ranjit Guha, Partha Chatterjee, Gautam Bhadra, Gayatri Chatterjee, Dipesh Chaterjee et al are notable to initiate this kind of method. It is notable that the method is not very ancient. But Swami Vivekananda was enough to be the greatest in …….lower classes’ history in his own time. And it is no doubt that the method is popular and significant. It is my little effort to focus on Vivekananda’s thought for the development of backward classes. My effort is based on Vivekananda’s “speech”, writings, books, and letters and so on.

What Is Meant by Cognitive Structures? How Does It Influence Teaching –Learning of Psychology?
Navaneedhan, C. Girija

Psychology
Cognitive structure, Metaphorical thinking, Mental Representations, Intellectual framework and Teaching/Learning process
Cognitive structures are the basic mental pattern people use to process any information. Metaphorical thinking being one of the mental tool present innate in human beings which when practiced consciously could help developing cognitive structures in turn help to process information. According to Jean Piaget and William Perry learning is facilitated by the mechanism comprising symbolic representations of the mental processes that is actively constructed by the learners based on the existing cognitive structures. Therefore, teaching/learning process should focus on the development of existing intellectual framework. Unlike the behaviourist approach, knowledge is acquired by the learner through intentional mental representations derived from past learning experiences. Teacher’s role is to facilitate the learners with resources to build new knowledge to old and to modify the old to accommodate the new. The present paper focuses on how cognitive structures help in processing information by implementing metaphorical thinking statements in teaching/leaning process.

Policy and scope for practice of ergonomics in Agro Processing Industries in Kerala

Agriculture
Agree business, Agripreneurship, Agro industries
Kerala agriculture, over the last few decades has been facing multifaceted challenges, from the conversion of its green land-both wet and garden for the housing well as commercial purposes. The tillers of the land, to a large extent still remain only a producer of raw material in the sector. While the farm land productivity in rupee terms of Kerala agriculture is highest in the country with Rs.53,000/-per hector, the achievement of bottom level farmers still remain pathetic with all profits of value addition swept away by few agents in the industry. Why there is not much value addition done by the basic producers? The answer is clearly the lack of capital base and poor entrepreneurship in the unorganized sector. There are rays of hope in the activities of our new gen agriculture officers who are widely organizing production and marketing activities in rural areas, which may cater to the self-reliance needs of rural farmers. Above all, the most promising area is the value addition sector in agriculture. This includes sub sectors like dairy products and livestock products also.

There is no platform and mechanism for the integrated construction of curriculum content. This is reflected in the layout of the syllabus, curriculum standards, teaching objectives, and teaching content of universities, middle schools, and primary schools, and the overall arrangement has not yet been formed. Secondly, the content of ideological and political courses is duplicated. Third, there are gaps in the content of ideological and political courses. Finally, the content of ideological and political courses is inverted. Although the content of the ideological and political course as a whole embodies the line of understanding from low to high, from concrete to abstract, the phenomenon of abstract in primary schools and normative and concrete in universities still exists to varying degrees.

Competency Based Education and Training: A Fresh Green Leaf from the Australian Context for TVET in Africa
Edwin Obwoge, Makworo
Education Management
Competence Based Training, TVET, Technical skills
The labour market in most developing countries in Africa has experienced challenges of qualified human resource to carry out their desired functions. The academic institutions are supposed to produce graduates who would readily fit into the job market. The TVET institutions were designed to produce graduates with technical skills to work in the industrial sector and other sectors of the economy in order to accelerate economic development. However there have been many complaints from many employers on non-competence of most TVET graduates and this has seriously incapacitated economic development in Africa. Many employers have to spend time retraining the TVET graduates which wastes time and resources that would have been used in production. This paper reviews literature on competence based education and training and draws important lessons for application, policy formulation and improvement in the African systems. Competency-based education could serve as a game changer in Technical and Vocational Education, delivering high-quality education experiences that lead to demonstrated learning and mastery at an affordable price.

Hysterical Screaming & Cruel Reality-A Study of The Story of An Hour from the perspective of Peirce’s Semiotic Theory
Zheng, Jiayi
Literature Studies
The Story of an Hour; Peirce’s semiotic theory; signs
The Story of An Hour has always been regarded as the representative work of the American writer Kate Chopin. Concise in its language, the novel mainly describes the psychological changes and emotional experience of Mrs. Mallard after she was informed of her husband’s death. Since its publication, relative research on the work has usually focused on the theme, expression and narrative strategy of the novel. Seldom finds that the use of signs, an inseparable part of the text, has been applied skillfully to express the theme. Therefore, this study attempts to explore the symbolic meaning of hysterical screaming and cruel reality in The Story of an Hour by analyzing the use of signs under the theoretical framework of Peirce’s Semiotics.

Machiavellianism; Aspirations; Quality of Life; Subjective Happiness; Interning Doctors; Practicing Doctors
The present quantitative study adopts a between group design to assess the difference between interning doctors and practicing doctors in the levels of Machiavellianism, aspirations, quality of life and subjective happiness. A correlational design was also employed to determine if quality of life and subjective happiness can be predicted by Machiavellianism and its dimensions of amorality, desire for status, desire for control and distrust of others; and aspirations and its dimensions of wealth, fame, image, personal growth, relationships, community, and health. Purposive Sampling and Snowball Sampling techniques were used to collect data from 100 interning and 100 practicing doctors. Independent t-test results showed that practicing doctors were significantly higher on Machiavellianism and its dimensions of amorality, desire for status and distrust of others; aspirations, its dimension of image, community, health, and physical quality of life. Interning doctors were higher on desire for control, fame aspirations, psychological health and overall quality of life. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that personal growth and health aspirations predicted quality of life in interning doctors and Machiavellianism, amorality; wealth, fame, image, community and health aspirations predicted quality of life among practicing doctors. Health aspiration was a predictor of subjective happiness in interning doctors. In practicing doctors, amorality, desire for status, distrust of others; wealth, fame, image, personal growth, relationships, community and health aspirations were predictors of subjective happiness. In present day India the rapidly changing and overburdened healthcare system has affected the well being of health care professionals and the present study throws light on to some factors that may influence quality of life and happiness of doctors in India.

Bhartṛhari and Wittgenstein on Grammar: A Few Observations
Seneviratne, Rohana
Language & Literature
Bhartṛhari, Wittgenstein, grammar, Vākyapadīya, philosophy of language, meaning
Irrespective of spatiotemporal limitations of the world's intellectual history, discussions on the language have attracted considerable attention of philosophers, linguists, and even the public. The topics of such discussions have also included the meaning, nature or function/s, and necessity of grammar while diverse arguments have been raised both in support and against even its ontic presence. Among the philosophers from all ages who attempted to analyze the foundation of those arguments, i.e. the common notion that grammar is prescriptive and fruit of pedagogical instructions, Bhartṛhari(c. 450 - 510 C.E.) stands significant because of the richness and legitimacy of his arguments at such an early age of history. More than a millennium later, Ludwig Wittgenstein as a highly influential philosopher from the last century shows some relationship with Bhartrhari in (re)confirming that our common construal of grammar cannot be valid because of its non-prescriptive nature. While attempting to examine the ways in which Bhartṛhari and Wittgenstein have interpreted grammar, this paper succinctly investigates each philosopher approaches towards the language in use.

Employers, especially those in industries, have lately been complaining on the preparedness of university engineering graduates to take up employment. This is despite the fact that universities require engineering undergraduates to undertake Industry Based Learning which is a form of attachment that introduce them to field of work and practical skills while still undertaking their undergraduate course. An investigation into the perceptions of alumni of University of Nairobi and their employers on the effectiveness of the Industrial Based Learning programme was made. Alumni who graduated with Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree between 2007 and 2011 participated in the study. Using case study survey designs, a sample of 265 respondents was accessed from a population of 417 graduates through snowball method. Thirty employers were purposefully sampled and 20 were accessed. In addition,5 out of 48 academic and technical staff of Department of Electric and Electrical Engineering answered the questionnaires. Questionnaires were self-administered to the respondents at their place of work. For respondents who were in far-flung areas, questionnaires were emailed followed with telephone discussions. The alumni rated the Industry Based Learning as unsatisfactory largely due to the University’s inadequate assistance in securing attachments for students and failure of lecturers to adequately supervise students during attachments. The employers perceived Industry Based Learning as a critical experience that improved employees’ productivity. One of the conclusions was that undergraduate attachment was important for it provided a valuable opportunity for gaining necessary skills and training for subsequent use in employment. A major recommendation was the need to formulate an Industry Based Learning/internship policy in the University.

Managing Professional Promotion Mechanism for Rural Teachers at the Pre-service Stage

rural teachers, pre-service phase of rural teachers, promotion mechanism
Rural teachers' pre-service stage professional promotion mechanism refers to a series of rule-based systems of incentives, constraints and guarantees implemented to promote rural teachers' professional growth before they enter into the profession. At present, although the pre-service stage professional promotion mechanism of rural teachers in China has various forms and fruitful contents, the effectiveness of its implementation is very limited. This paper argues that the enrolment mechanism of orientation and priority for rural children, the training mechanism of public funding and contract flexibility, and competition for entry into the countryside, with the compilation of the post, are the current effective mechanisms to promote the professional growth of rural teachers at the pre-service stage.

The MANOVA result led to reject the null hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance that there would be no significant multivariate effect for the combined dependent variables of self-efficacy and teacher effectiveness in respect of teachers’ level of PCK in geography with Wilks' Lambda (i.e. Exact Statistic) value of .970, Pillai's Trace value of .030, Hotelling’s Trace value of .031 and Roy's Largest Root value of .031. All the ‘p’ values were less than .05. Post hoc test showed that teachers with high level of PCK in Geography were significantly different from the teachers having moderate and low levels of PCK in geography in their self-efficacy. On the other hand, teachers with high level of PCK were significantly different from the teachers having low levels of PCK in geography in teacher effectiveness. Study also revealed that, teachers self-efficacy is positively related with teacher effectiveness in geography teaching.

cohesion, coherence, teacher trainees, argument essay, grammatical cohesion
This study examines grammatical cohesion in teacher trainees’ argument essay. Twenty scripts of teacher trainees’ argument essay were purposely selected from a total of hundred essays which were assessed by two inter-raters and used as data for the study. The study basically applied a qualitative method of analysis to the data. The theoretical framework that underpins the study is Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) influential theory of cohesion in English. Three major findings were made. First, teacher trainees frequently use reference and conjunctions to achieve coherence in their argument essay. Second, a good quality essay cannot be judged on the number of cohesive markers present, linguistic features such as grammatical rules of concord and verb tense are equally important. The study further showed that the least used cohesive devices are substitution and ellipsis. The findings of this study have implications for pedagogy and further research.

Online English teaching, Classroom English Teaching, a contrastive study,
Facing the Novel Coronal Virus (NCoV) in China, teachers, and students are required to realize the idea “Class-stop means not stopping learning” so that all schools in China start the online teaching. This paper, from the view of NCoV , based on the educational principles and features of online English teaching and traditional classroom English teaching, contrastively discusses what goes on in these two teaching ways and attempts to prove that online English teaching is only used as a kind of teaching aids and cannot be considered as the equal status as the classroom English teaching, which may offer the sign both for design the teaching software and for the reform of our country’s education system.

Impact of MGNREGA on Tribal Migration in Sarenga Development Block

MGNREGA, Rural Employment Guarantee, Welfare Schemes
Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme is one of the most important and largest public programme in India. The main objective of this programme is to provide 100 days of assured employment to rural household and to create sustainable asset. In this paper we have studied the secondary objective of MGNREGA that is to reduce migration and creation of sustainable asset in light of tribal perspective. In this paper we work in migration data for July 2007 to June 2008 NSSO & Census of India, 2011 data. By our analysis we find that Migration is a complex process, it is not always done due to poverty and desperate situation, but complex factors (facilities, education). People especially tribals are migrating due to lack of adequate agricultural land, inadequate agricultural production, less irrigation facilities, and acute water scarcity and stringent enforcement of Forest Laws before implantation of Forest Act. At the macro level analysis, correlation between migration and MGNREGA is very weak. From the literature as well as supported by the micro-assessment, MGNREGA is helping poor and weaker section of the community by providing employment at critical period of a year (seasonal migration). In principal, MGNREGA can help to reduce temporary migration but is ineffective in long period, when several factors would change together.

Educational activities, Home, Primary Schools, Ainabkoi, Parent’s participation, Parental involvement
Poor performance in Kenya Certificate of Primary Education Examinations has often been attributed to a lack of parental participation in children’s academics. The claim that parents are not supportive of their children, especially at home, therefore holds water as researchers have established that parent involvement with their children's homework could have an influence on their academic performance. This paper draws our attention to a study conducted to investigate the influence of parental involvement in school work on pupils’ academic performance in public primary schools in Ainabkoi Sub County, Kenya. Joyce Epstein’s framework of six types of parent involvement guided the study adopting the ex-post facto research design. Targeting 2404 Class 8 pupils and 61 class teachers in Ainabkoi Sub County, the authors drew a sample of 331 class eight pupils through stratified simple random sampling while census approach was employed to involve all the class teachers in the selected schools. The modes of data collection used were questionnaire and interview schedule whose validity was ensured through pilot study and reliability by test-retest technique. Quantitative data was then analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics in the form of percentages, means and chi-square, to test the study hypothesis. It was found out that parental participation in educational activities at home (X2=8.196; p=0.017) had a positive and significant influence on academic performance in public primary schools. Qualitative data was presented thematically. The study recommends that parents should provide their children with the required learning materials, such as supplementary reading complements to improve their academic performance.

double reduction, easing burdens and increasing efficiency, junior high school
Under the environment of a “double reduction” policy, the concept of reducing the burden and increasing efficiency is of practical significance to constructing efficient classrooms, easing students’ excessive homework burdens and improving teaching quality for teachers. Frontline teachers, as implementers and promoters of the “double reduction” policy, innovate teaching methods from the mode of the layered teaching, homework management mechanism, language environment and assessment ways through interpreting the “double reduction” policy and combining it with the existing problems in junior high school English classroom. These ways ensure that students learn well in class and achieve the goal of reducing excessive academic burdens on students and increasing teaching efficiency for teachers.

Education Management
identification, assessment, parental involvement Background to the Study
The assessment of children with special needs is an important component of SNE. The process of educational assessment involves identification of children with special needs and disabilities, administration of tests and intervention. The Educational Assessment and Resource centers (EARCs) in Kenya are mandated to provide assessment services. The principles of assessment require the involvement of parents in the assessment process. Preliminary survey on 120 parents from 10 counties whose children had special needs reveals that only 51(43%) parents were involved in the assessment process. The roles of parents include provision of background information; instruction of children during the administration of the tests and training children after assessment. What is unknown is the extent of parental involvement in the assessment process at the EARCs in Kenya. The purpose of this study was to establish the extent of parental involvement in the identification of children with special needs in Kenya. The objectives of the study were to; examine the involvement of parents in the identification of children with special needs. The study employed descriptive survey research design. The target population was 47 assessment teachers, 94 parents of children assessed and 47 parents of children to be assessed from 47 centers in 47 counties in Kenya. Saturated sampling technique was used to select assessment teachers. Purposive sampling was used to select parents of the already assessed children and 41 parents of those to be assessed. Questionnaires, interview guides, observation schedules and document analysis guides were used for data collection. Face and content validity of the instruments were ascertained by experts from the department of Special Needs Education Maseno University. Reliability of the instruments was determined through a pilot study on 10% of the population using test-retest. The acceptable reliability was set at r = 0.70.Quantitative data was analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and mean scores. Qualitative data was organized and reported in an on-going process as themes and sub-themes. The study found out that there was a minimal involvement of parents in the assessment process at the centers in Kenya (M=2.18). The study concluded that assessors with training specifically in assessment were positive in involving parents in the assessment process at the EARCs compared to those who had qualifications in SNE without a specific training in assessment. The study recommends that a certificate or diploma course tailored to train assessors in assessment procedures, assessment techniques, guidance and counseling, referral and placement procedures be introduced at a relevant institution to train only assessors. It is also recommended that a policy on assessment procedures to harmonize assessment services in Kenya be enacted by the government. The research findings may help to improve parental involvement in the assessment process at the EARCs in Kenya.

awareness, academic accommodation, students at-risk
The pervasive problem that the Philippine education faces today is teaching students whose attempts at learning result in failure and eventually dropping out of school. This study attempted to identify students at-risk so that teachers may understand their needs and support them. This descriptive research determined the level of awareness of teachers of West Visayas State University-Janiuay Campus, Iloilo regarding students at-risk and their academic accommodation. This study attempted to determine whether the level of awareness of teachers regarding student at-risk affects their accommodation practices they provide. The respondents of the study were the twenty four (24) first year advisers selected through total enumeration of the population. The study showed that when taken as an entire group and when grouped according to various categories, teachers’ level of awareness of student at-risk was fairly aware. Only teachers who master’s degree holders were very aware and with master’s units were less aware. On the other hand, the level of awareness of teachers on academic accommodation of students at-risk were consistently very aware when taken as an entire group and when grouped according to various categories. Only male teachers and teachers of the schools of Hotel and Services Technology and Industrial Technology were extremely aware.Generally, the most frequently used accommodation practices of teachers while dealing with students at-risk was management followed by assessment and instruction. Another topic featured in the literature includes discussion of the risk factors that act as antecedents to at-risk and the legal foundation of the study.

Students' Level of Financial Support Satisfaction Towards Their Daily Allowance
Jerald, Moneva

Education Management
Daily allowance, Financial support, Satisfaction, Debts and Liabilities
The purpose of this study is to determine the association on the students' level of financial support satisfaction and their daily allowance. The study used a quantitative approach-descriptive correlation using a self-made questionnaire that was answered by the senior high school student. The questionnaire mainly indicates the different ranges of school allowances and factors that influence the students' satisfaction. The weighted mean was used for computing the mean of the level of financial support satisfaction that students feel towards their daily allowance. It used the chi-square (x²) showing a significant association between students' financial support satisfaction and school allowance. Students' financial support satisfaction depends on the level of their daily allowance. Most of the students have the ranges forty-one to fifty pesos as their daily allowance. With this, students are satisfied with their daily school allowances. The students seem to have a peaceful mind in their financial life because of meeting financial obligations with fewer debts and liabilities. A student who manages well a financial resource leads to lesser debts and liabilities which tend to increase the level of financial support satisfaction. Furthermore, a financial support satisfied student is more confident, tolerant and less prone to stress for having improved individual well-being. In order to enhance budgeting skills and increased level of financial support satisfaction, this study suggests exploring more on the students who are making debts at an early age.

Influence of Gender Status on Discourse Behaviour of Women
Abaya, Ruth
Gender Studies
discourse; register; gender; power
The focus of this paper is on the role of language as a powerful tool in representing and structuring the world. We will explore how language can help construct stereotype identities and human relationships. Gender being a socially constructed definition of women and men, it is determined by the conception of tasks, functions and roles attributed to women and men in society, in public and private life; whereas power is reflected in every aspect of communication from what the actual topic of the communication is to the ways in which it is communicated. Most researches have focused on the spoken aspect of language giving little attention to the written discourse; this paper will consider how gender is reflected in the written media. Therefore the purpose of this paper will be to examine the influence of gender status on the discourse behavior of women. The objectives of this study will be to examine the linguistic forms used by women and to determine whether they reinforce or transform gender status. The Socio-Constructionist Theory will be adopted for this study together with the Critical Discourse Analysis. It is hoped that the findings of this study will shed light to prove whether Lakoff 1975’s view that ‘women’s register’ serves to maintain their inferior role in the society and that they tend to use linguistic forms that reflect and reinforce a subordinate role is justified. This study also seeks to give response to the question whether language differences are related specifically to gender or to status and power of an individual. Secondary data which will be collected from eight randomly sampled Daily Nation newspapers more specifically the Saturday Magazine inside the Daily Nation of the few selected months and various linguistic behaviors will be picked to support the findings and conclusions arrived at by this study.

Marriage is Shackle: Alcott’s Sobered and Muddled View of Women in Little Women
Minghui, Qiu
Literature Studies
Little Women, Marriage, Feminism, Louisa May Alcott
Little Women is a classic work of literature that has captivated readers for generations. It tells the story of four sisters who grow up during the Civil War era in America and explores their struggles with poverty, societal expectations, and their own personal desires. While the book is celebrated for its portrayal of strong female characters and their self-awareness, it also highlights the limitations and one-sidedness of women’s consciousness awakening, particularly with regard to the view of marriage. Alcott’s progressive female thoughts are evident, as she portrays women who are determined to carve out their own paths and not be solely defined by their marital status. However, at the same time, there is an underlying sentiment of traditional gender roles and the idealization of marriage, which limits the full expression of a woman’s agency. This dependence on men is further reinforced by the societal norms and beliefs surrounding marriage during that time, such as portraying it as the ultimate goal of a woman’s life.

Understanding Developmental Characteristics of a Child in Christian Faith among Sunday-School Children in Kenya
Mambo, Alice W.
Social Sciences
Anglican Church, Children education, Developmental characteristics, Sunday school
This paper extensively presents the theme of Christian education with a focus on the Sunday school children in Kenya. The author reviews the developmental stage characteristics of the Sunday school children of the Anglican Church to express the aspect of child Christian education in the contemporary society. While Parents are entrusted with the primary responsibility of nurturing, shaping, training and equipping their children to be God-honoring, obedient, and productive members in society; this responsibility in the modern society has been passed on to secular surrogates who do the educating in their place. It is nonetheless still the key responsibility of parents that their children receive rightful Christian education. The study is limited to children between ages two to eleven years in the church Sunday school in a Kenyan context. More so, the guidelines in this study are limited to the Sunday school for the Christian education of children in the Anglican Church of Kenya with which the author is more conversant.

Therapeutic breathing techniques, alternative intervention, yoga, English, mathematics, achievement gap
This paper explores possible correlation between Therapeutic Breathing Techniques (TBT) and improved academic performance of low achieving students in elementary school. The intervention consisted of daily breathing exercises combining two forms of TBT, namely, deep breathing and alternate nostril breathing. A semester-long quantitative study with85 second graders was conducted to investigate the impact of above intervention on English and mathematics scores. Following one semester of intervention, the gaps between the low and high achievers had narrowed and small but significant gain-scores were found for the low achievers who had practiced TBT. In contrast, in first and third grades, where neither low achievers nor high achievers received the treatment, the gap between the low and high achievers widened slightly. The findings indicate the need to further investigate the potential merit of therapeutic breathing exercises as a low-cost intervention strategy for improving school performance and addressing achievement gaps, especially in mathematics.

Oriental Approach to Environmental Protection and Perspective of Media
Mishra, Sunil Kumar
Developmental Studies
Environmental Protection, means of development
Environment is all persistent. It is the region of our existence. It envelops us. Since, we know that Nature, mother of human beings, has blessed us with a beautiful environment and as per environmental determinism, environment decides human lifestyle. There is a reciprocal relationship between the mankind and the environment. Environment fulfills our all needs but due to our greed, we harm it in many ways. In the name of so called development human has indulged himself in various activities like deforestation, air pollution, soil pollution, water pollution, global warming etc. which is leading towards environmental weakening. If we want to save ourselves, we must be sensitive towards environment. We can find various ways to respect our environment in Sanskrit literature. The Rigveda venerates deities like Mitra, Varuna, Indra, Maruts and Aditya, that are responsible for maintaining the requisite balance in the functioning of all entities of nature whether the mountains, lakes, heaven and earth, the forests or the waters. Yajurveda, which is one of the most valuable literature of sanskrit has been seen as great advocate of environmental protection. The meaning of Yajurveda describes a dynamic thing which travels in sky. Yajurveda advocates a great respect towards every component of environment.‘Om dayoh shanti rantriksham shantih, prithvi shanti raapah shantiroshdhayah shantih. Vanaspatayah shantirvishwe devah shanti brahm shantih, sarvam shantih shantirev shantih sa ma shantiredhi. Om shantih shantih shantih.’1 means “May peace radiate there in the whole sky as well as in the vast ethereal space everywhere. May peace reign all over this earth, in water and in all herbs, trees and creepers. May peace flow over the whole universe. May peace bein the supreme being brahman. And may there always exist in all peace and peace alone. Aum peace, peace, and peace to us and all begins. The sages of the Atharva Veda chanted ‘what of thee I dig out, let that quickly grow over, let me not hit thy vital, or thy heart.’ This means that one can take from the earth and atmosphere only so much as one puts back to them. In present days, this is considered one of the most important principles of sustainable development. The purity and quality of water has been highlighted in the Atharva Veda. It is mentioned that pure water cures many ailments and it acts as preventer of the diseases which are not yet contracted. Atharva Veda also speaks about the protection of wildlife and domestic cattle. The cattle were meant to adorn the ceremony but not for sacrifice.”2When we take bath we worship river and respect this source of water as "Gange cha Yamune chaiva,Saraswathi, Godhaavari, "Taambraparni "Narmathe,Zindhu,Kaveri Jalesmin Zannithim Kuru." In our Vedas every component of environment has been described as valuable and precious things for our existence. It also draws our attention on the philosophy of sustainable development.

Designing a Stratified English Homework in Primary Schools under the Concept of Double Reduction
Wenling, Liu
Education
double reduction; stratified homework; primary school English
The design of homework for primary school English teaching is important, but it has not been given enough attention in actual primary school English teaching. Teachers focus more on teaching than on designing homework. They prioritize grammar over critical thinking. They focus on the whole class instead of on each student individually. The quality of primary school English homework should be improved by focusing on the purpose, applicability, and individuality of the homework.

Verifiability and Falsifiability as Parameters for Scientific Methodology
Shankar, Sandhya
Education Management
Scientific Methodology, linguistics, education
The question of 'how do we come to know' has been the search of mankind since time immemorial. Neither has there been a consensus for that question nor there will be. Many a great minds have looked into this, coming up with various perspectives. Two such varying perspectives in this field are empiricism and rationalism. While the former emphasizes that experience (through senses) is the only source of knowledge the latter upholds that there is something beyond the sense experience, the mind that is the source of knowledge. The shift towards a scientific phase from that of the earlier theological and metaphysical phase gained popularity with positivism, where progress of human knowledge was considered in identifying truths through scientific methods. In this scientific journey towards knowing the world emphasis was on empirically observable things. It was believed that there are no ideas which come into our head without being dependent on our perceptions, thereby on our experience. The basis of classical science was considered getting empirical observations. It had to be a systematic way of studying what is out there. Purpose of science was considered to be limited to things which can be observed, thus being connected to a means of being verified. This paper thus looks into the notion of verifiability as an important parameter of scientific methodology and its importance as asserted by logical positivists. But this criteria of scientific method was challenged by another criteria, that of falsifiability. The next section will look into falsifiability as another parameter of scientific methodology. Since these parameters have been discussed widely among philosophers, this paper shall be focusing on the views of A. J. Ayer and Sir Karl Popper regarding the same. Furthermore, its application and relevance to the field of linguistics will also be discussed.

attitudes, knowledge, peace education, Pre-Service Teachers, skills, values
Pre-service teachers who were acquainted with the schemes of peace education can be an agent of transformation in the global society and must place peace education in their heart as future teachers. A sample of 80 students of WVSU-Janiuay Campus was chosen through stratified sampling. Data were gathered with the aid of peace education awareness questionnaire-checklist adapted from Castro & Galace (2008). It utilized the descriptive design to collect, analyze and classify data on the level of awareness of the pre-service teachers on the Knowledge, Attitudes, Values and Skills (KAVS) schemas of peace education. The combined scores of pre-service teachers were aware of peace education’s knowledge, attitudes, values and skills areas. When classified as to course, the BEED, were aware while the BSED were very aware. Both male and female were aware. Those with high grade point average were very aware while those with average and low grade point average were aware of the peace education schemas. As an entire group, the attitudes and values scores of the respondents were aware and when grouped according to course, it showed that all respondents were very aware. Both sexes were aware of peace education KAVS.

teacher talk; language classrooms; second language; teacher talk framework
This paper systematically reviews the studies of second language teacher talk in language classrooms firstly from the perspective of framework and then from three categories-linguistic function, medium-oriented function, procedural and regulative function. Next, a critical review of the relevant literature in China will be presented with the help of the tool Citespace. Through the comparison of studies at home and abroad, it is of significance to enhance the research in primary and secondary schools in China and consider the frameworks of teacher talk given by domestic authoritative scholars and look deep into teachers' discourse awareness and competence. Additionally, there are still many fields that researchers have not paid attention to, such as language selection and conversion, language ability, other time of teacher talk (play time; silence), lesson type (listening and speaking, reading and writing) etc.

While a few specialists — like troublesome development master Clayton Christensen—trust that new advances will significantly change instructive models, others are taking a more wary position, contending that the approach of radio or TV had raised comparable hypotheses. The jury is still out. In the interim, we can recognize channels through which new innovations can enhance instruction frameworks. The OECD report Students, Computers and Learning: Making the Connection has hosed eagerness in a few quarters. It found that PC use in school was not methodicallly connected with enhanced learning results in OECD nations, and one key message is that availability and instructive programming supplement direction when pedagogical methodologies and instructors as of now advance understudy drove learning and encourage basic considering.

Implication of Class-Based Assessment on Teachers: A Case Study
Ali, Feroz Mohammed
Iqubal, MD Asif
Education Management
Class-based assessment, Secondary school, Evaluation
In Fiji, assessment has always been guided by curriculum through examination and tests which merely enclosed students’ aptitude of recalling conception skills. Supplementary categories of skills like application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation are barely incorporated in the traditional appraisal. Some of the indispensable qualities are not included in the customary assessment system. This makes learners rely extremely on their memorization skill leading them to become helpless, deficient required excellence to contribute fruitfully to the society. The government of Fiji has a sensible vision for the stipulation of its education organization and has impartially arbitrated the Class-Based Assessment (CBA) aspirant for learners’ holistic development. CBA has been implemented in secondary schools in 2009, through a pilot project. This research reveals the current status of the implemented assessment scheme through a study of a group of teachers of secondary schools and CBA resource personnel’s from the Ministry of Education. It discusses the issues emerging from the arguments of the scholars regarding CBA and its potentiality in Fiji. Despite the popularity and wide acceptance of Class-Based assessment in the western countries and Fiji itself it has often been criticized for several reasons, most of them related to the utilitarian perspective and related ethical considerations. CBA seems to be very difficult to maintain within the stipulated time of teaching. It is difficult for the teachers to switch from summative assessment to formative one as it seems an extra assessment together with a final examination.

Education Management
extracurricular activities, attachment, emotion regulation, career aspirations
The term extracurricular activities are defined as any structured activity supervised by one or more adults outside regular school hours or the home. Attachment is an enduring emotional bond which an individual forms to another person. Emotion regulation refers to how we try to influence which emotions we have, when we have them, and how we experience and express these emotions. Career aspirations are defined as long-term individual work related goals. Non-probability purposive sampling was used to select a sample of 230 adolescents aged 12 to 16 years. They were divided into three groups: not involved, moderately involved and highly involved in extracurricular activities. The study adopts a factorial design to determine whether there are any main and interactional effects of the level of involvement in extracurricular activities and gender on attachment, emotion regulation and career aspirations in adolescents. The study also adopts a correlational design to determine if the dimensions of attachment and emotion regulation predict career aspirations among adolescents who are not involved, moderately involved and highly involved in extracurricular activities The results showed an influence of involvement in extracurricular activities on adolescents’ mother attachment, father attachment and peer attachment, and career aspirations. Further, adolescents who are highly involved in extracurricular activities were found to be high on alienation. The predictors for career aspirations and its dimension among adolescents who are not involved and moderately involved were found to be peer attachment and its dimensions. However, for those who are highly involved in extracurricular activities, the predictors for career aspirations were found to be mother and father attachment dimensions. The study recommends encouraging adolescents’ participation in extracurricular activities for positive youth development.

Foreign Trade, Indian GDP, FTP, FDI in India, Exim Policy
Transactions related to global trade flows have significantly improved at present, on account of the internationalization and highly developed e-commerce. Exports and imports opportunities have substantially increased so also risk associated with international trade has reached a high level. Along with issues related to languages used for communication involved in international marketing, drafting of letter of intent / purchase order, drafting of letter of credit, financing during execution of purchase order, pre and post shipment inspection and finally negotiation of bank documents for collection of payments, the international trade was always been quite risky. This risk is because of the fact that exporters and importers are from different countries, separated not only by physical distance but by socio political conditions. Actual trade flows determines quantum of foreign trade. Foreign trade divided by GDP is a good measure of improvement or growth in foreign trade. (Harrison 1996). There is a positive relationship between Foreign Trade well supported by domestic as well as foreign banks and economic growth (Edwards 1992).Mixed results are obtained during the study related to explanation of the causal relationship between the degree of openness of the economy and economic growth. This paper takes a review of India’s Foreign Trade with reference to post RBI Road Map 2005 and financing by Foreign Banks (FB) during the period 2003-2013.

A total of 30 respondents were surveyed, the majority of whom were rank and file owners of licensed SMEs. The information gathered from the respondents was encoded, tallied, and analyzed using statistical tools such as Percentage, Frequency Distribution, Weighted Mean, Pearson r, and Thematic Analysis. The findings revealed a significant relationship between the respondents' marketing mix and business performance. Furthermore, the majority of respondents are dissatisfied with the business performance they are providing. full employment, reflection, experiential learning, developmental psychology, sustainable development
The unemployment of youth in India is on the rise. The employability of fresh graduates in India is very low. The general productivity of workforce is also very low. Proper and more interventions, positive actions are required to address the above problems. Solutions may be possible through the four elements of psychological capital development of youth namely, confidence, optimism, perseverance and bouncing back. This paper attempts first mapping the author's own concrete life-long experience with PysCap elements. Then attempting to abstract conceptualizing an action plan, as a learner. This has given some insights, particularly taking the Indian context of spirituality, large population of unemployed youth and how they could be given proper orientation on industry expectation and developing networks through mentors from industry, as one of the best method of effective skill training is by the employer whether formal or informal training, as the industry can not reject the educated youth, after they complete their education. In addition, the paper presents a learner produced integrated PsyCap schematic diagram and recommends an action plan which can be taken up for further participatory-action research. The paper can be used as a case study learning material for development students as this covers developmental psychology, adult education, traditional apprenticeship, gurukula, formal education, distance mode and self directed learning. The positive PsyCap development is not one time exercise, but spreads from young age to old age, as we can not waste the human resources of our country at this critical time of providing and meeting sustainable development goals.

The affinal kinship terminologies represent the second basic taxonomy of kinship relations in every culture. The study includes a qualitative analysis by adopting the ethnosemantic or Cultural Domain Analysis (CDA) approach to fulfil the aims of this study. This approach helps researchers to identify and discuss the main terminologies of affinal kinship domain used in Arab culture. The study is based on data collected from the Holy Quran and some Arabic philology books. The study of this social domain in Arab culture is very useful to perceive and transfer people’s culture to other communities. Moreover, recognizing and understanding certain culture’s domains and norms may help people from other cultures avoid miscommunication or misunderstanding of other’s cultures and help use the suitable items based on certain contexts. The findings of this study emphasised the importance of studying this domain as a socio-cultural phenomenon that may help distinguish the main terminologies of marriage relations in Arab culture.

Prostitution; Roxana; critical exploration; Roxana the Fortunate Mistress
Prostitution is said to be one of the world's oldest jobs. It is a social phenomenon with various root causes. Poverty, unemployment, and sometimes the necessity to do something to survive are some of the causes of prostitution. This activity is not without consequences for the practitioners. I have decided to critically explore Daniel Defoe’s Roxana the Fortunate Mistress to find out the reasons behind some women practicing such an activity. The study mainly focuses on the behaviour of the characters Roxana in the two novels. The main aim of the study is to put stress on the consequences of prostitution and draw the attention of the young generation on the dangers of prostitution and provide them with pieces of advice on the benefits of adopting decent behaviour. Based on psychoanalysis and feminism as literary theories, I conclude that prostitution is often linked to materialism and female greed.

Proof from this field and others joined with Darwin's system framed the advanced hypothesis of development, called the present day blend. Here, we will examine the fundamental purposes of the present day amalgamation. Proof from exploratory hereditary qualities, scientific displaying of populaces, direct perception of regular populaces, and investigation of the fossil record every single made commitment to the current union. We will likewise analyze the instrument of normal determination as it can now be comprehended from the angle of hereditary qualities. We will perceive how transformation offers ascend to new alleles, which might then pass on more prominent wellness to people bearing them, and accordingly be spread all through a populace.
