Academic achievement, Determination, Extrovert, Introvert, Students, Self-confidence
An introvert is said to be a kind of student who is quiet and doesn’t open easily. On the contrary, when a student is friendly, talkative and quickly makes friends, the student’s form of personality is extroverted. This study aimed to know the difference between the self-confidence of introvert students and extrovert students. Introverts and extroverts pick their preferences from different priorities. For them to enhance their confidence students should establish a strong belief for their selves. The development of self-confidence must be essential and allows students to demonstrate their expertise and talents. The study was a quantitative design that makes use of the research questionnaire. The researcher surveyed the Senior High School with a total of two hundred thirty-five respondents who are requested to answer the questionnaire. Quantitative data were processed using chi-square. The study has shown the students' self-confidence in terms of education, talents, socialization, and achievements. It shows that introvert students have a higher frequency than the extrovert students. Results also show that self-confidence implies that the extrovert respondents are not enough in expressing their personality. They need to re-build their personality types to gain some confidence. It can be inferred that there is no significant difference between the self-confidence of the introvert students and extrovert students.

Active Role Played by Education to Develop Environmental Ethics among Indian Teenagers
Mishra, Ashish
Education Management
Role of Education, Environmental Ethics, Adolescents
Education plays a vital role in overall development of a child i.e., cognitive, affective and psychomotor. It acts as a lighting lamp to show the right path to guide the human being in a rational manner. Education makes a person competent enough to judge what is right or what is wrong, as well. At present the problem of environmental degradation is very much in limelight. It is observed that lack of proper knowledge and awareness among the citizen regarding conservation of environment is the prime reason for the environmental degradation. Since, India has an advantage of demographic dividend thus; it will be very useful to educate its youth especially the teenagers/adolescents regarding conservation of environment. The adolescents must be aware of environmental morality that should be taught to them in learning centres. The environmental ethics is the philosophical discipline that considers the moral and ethical relationship of human beings to the environment. In other words: what, if any, moral obligation does man has to the preservation and care of the non-human world? Thus, the present paper focuses on the role of education for developing environmental ethics among adolescents in India. It can be inferred that, education can serve as a potent tool in developing environmental ethics among Indian adolescents because; they are the future of the country and have huge potential to incorporate the ethics in environmental conservation to manage the degrading environment.

A Study on Path of Rural Teachers Helping the Inheritance of Vernacular Culture in China
Li, Ji
Teacher Training
Rural teachers, Vernacular culture, Culture inheritance, Paths
Vernacular culture is the root of Chinese culture, in essence, so the inheritance of vernacular culture is crucial. Rural teachers are the "rural talents" in rural areas and have been playing various roles as cultural inheritors, protectors and leaders. The cultural responsibilities of rural teachers in the new era face many difficulties: the lack of vernacular cultural literacy of rural teachers, the "urban orientation" of rural education, the backward ideology of rural parents, and the lack of funds. Under the call of rural cultural revitalization, rural teachers should re-erect the banner of cultural inheritance and contribute to rural cultural revitalization by focusing on cultivating rural teachers' local cultural literacy, developing school-based cultural curriculum and compiling local teaching materials, collaborating with village schools and making use of the Internet to promote the inheritance and development of vernacular culture.

The MGR Murder Trial, Literature Review
This paper looks at the intersection of cultural memory, war and literary narrative in the specific context of the civil wars that raged Sri Lanka. It would consider the dynamics of cultural memory of an ethnic minority group during a civil war. To achieve this, the paper would attempt a close study of Shobasakthi , the Tamil Eelam writer’s titular short story “The MGR Murder Trial” from his short story anthology. The use of a popular cultural icon is deliberate in the story. The paper would consider the symbolism of this usage and thereby arrive at the author’s response to the civil war.

Education Management
local context, global context, integration, comparison, association
Utilization of the surrounding environment as a learning resource is considered superior in improving comprehensively the knowledge, psychomotor and student affection. Learning about the environment (nature, socio-culture) allows new information to enrich the experience gained by students from outside the classroom. The surrounding environment-based learning should be enriched with information from relevant external sources, among others through mass media or reference/learning resources. Learning comes from the surrounding environment is very relevant and useful for schools (junior and senior high school) in the small island that experienced problems of lack of teaching materials, and the limitations of teachers. An interesting learning strategy in the development of learning comes from the surrounding environment is to compile and associate facts and phenomena (nature and social culture) that is around with external information that is passed through mass media or printed sources, photographs etc. This article discusses the design and experimental design of teaching in the form of thematic tasks that emphasize the learning process through comparison activities and local context associations with global context based on the concept of science and mathematics. The results of the experiments show that the group of students have the motivation and active activities of comparison and association of local context with global, although the mastery of science and mathematics concepts are not so good. Students generally perceive good and excellent design and testing of learning activities.

Transitivity and Narrative Therapy in The Woman Warrior

Literature Studies
The Woman Warrior; Maxine Hong Kingston; transitivity; narrative therapy
Since its publication in 1976, Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior has aroused widespread concerns and discussions in both China and abroad. This book is regarded as the pioneering work of Contemporary Chinese American literature and a masterpiece of feminism, relevant research serves to figure out the dilemma from which the Chinese American females suffered, as well as their struggle to fight against the racial and sexual discrimination attached to them. The present study is concerned with the identity of the Chinese Americans represented by Kingston herself as well as the author’s purport of adapting ancient Chinese tales, while ignoring the process of the protagonist’s self-awakening and how she employed narration to reconstruct her identity and getting access to education and power. This paper will focus on the therapeutic properties of narration in The Woman Warrior with the assistance of transitivity analysis, which illustrates that transitivity can reveal a character’s thinking pattern and that narration can help the narrator perceive the world in a more positive way and gain the necessary strength to fight for her own rights.

A Societal Analysis of Buddha in a Traffic Jam
Sunkanna, A.
Social Sciences
Societal values, cinema, movies
After a thorough watch of the film several times, Buddha in a Traffic Jam is considered to be an autobiographical film based on its writer & director Vivek Agnihotri's life. Based on true life incidents, its treatment is that of a new age political drama with a unique chapter wise approach to relevant topics leading to its climax. His storytelling format is like a book which takes off from prologue to epilogue and has chapters in between which are decently interesting. The film is an initiative by one of the top Business schools of the world, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad and this is the first Indian film ever based and shot in a B school. The script seems to have a forced irony and drama element to it which instantly puts one off.Film explores how certain universities are brainwashing students to become intellectual terrorists. The film also takes on various themes of corruption, campus politics, moral policing, crony socialism and the aspirational India wiping it clean of its middlemen. It probes deep into the relevance of socialism and capitalism in a poverty and corruption ridden India seeking to become a superpower.

Education Management
Educational Philosophies, Prevailing, Teachers
The transition from the traditional education system to the global system made some changes in the teachers’ educational philosophies. The teacher is a mentor, director, and educational leader in the educational process. A successful teacher is the one who is able to organize the work and classroom life, thus, teachers are somehow guided by certain philosophies as they enhance their pedagogical skills before practicing their profession. This study aimed to find out the prevailing educational philosophies of teachers when taken as a whole and when classified according tosex, age and area of specialization. The respondents of the study were the 62 regularcollege faculty of the West Visayas State University-Janiuay Campus who were chosen through total enumeration.Data were gathered with the aid of a self-made philosophic inventory checklist which was validated by experts and pilot- tested. It utilized the descriptive design to collect, analyze and classify data on the prevailing educational philosophies of pre-service teachers. Results showed that college facultywere likely to accept reconstructionism, behaviorism and progressivism as educational philosophies when taken as a whole and when classified according to sex, age and area of specializations. Conclusions and recommendations have been drawn at the end of this study.

Peking opera; Beijing opera; corpus; GLoWbE
The regional differences in the frequency of synonym use reflect the social cognition of various speech groups. Both Peking opera and Beijing opera refer to an identical Chinese cultural entity, but they differ considerably in international usage frequency in the GLoWbE where disparity can be manifested among 20 English-speaking communities. Beijing opera enjoys a slightly higher frequency than Peking opera in total, and several Asian and African countries even have no relevant data concerning this art. Besides, we explore some potential reasons for interpreting these phenomena.

Role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Teacher Education
Lastny Anal, Ruwndar
Education Management
ICT, Teacher Education
We are in the era of information where technology plays an important role to transact the information to the needed individuals in the education system. With the implementation of two years B.Ed. Programme, based on the recommendations of the Justice Verma Commission (2012), there has been a paradigm shift from the teacher centred to student-centred in the training of student teachers. There needs a proper propagation of knowledge in education which is possible through communication. ICT is a part of non-verbal form of language which is very effective in communication with respect to educational context. To make the teaching learning effective the responsible teachers should adapt or have positive attitude towards the use of ICT in education system. This makes the teachers comfortable in his/her teaching and can best expect the effective outcomes among the learners. This theoretical paper discusses about the role of ICT in Teacher Education and better transaction of teaching learning process through the use of ICT.

Reproductive Rights of a Woman – Myth or Reality?
Khanna, Monica
Women Studies
Women rights, femine studies, women empowerment
Feminist studies accord great importance to the issue of reproductive rights, because the control over her body is the first step that a woman takes towards liberation and freedom from the oppression by patriarchy. Adele Clarke in her essay ‘Subtle Forms of Sterilization Abuse’ comments: Reproduction is a fundamental human right: neither the state nor the actions of others should deny any person autonomy over their reproductive processes […] Reproductive freedom is the prerequisite for any kind of liberation for women. The right to decide whether and when to bear children is fundamental to a woman’s control of her own body, her sexuality, her life choices. (Clarke 1984: 189-190) This paper examines two stories which deal with the right of a woman to birth control and family planning, ‘Daktaramma’s Room’ (2004) by R. Chudamani and ‘Giribala’ (2004) by Mahashwta Devi.

Impact of Gendered Cultural Codes on Academic Performance of Female Students at a University in Masvingo, Zimbabwe
Manwa, Lilian
Education Management
Gender codes, role socialisation, Culture, Academic performance, Female student
This study sought to establish the impact of gendered cultural codes on the academic performance of female students at a university in Masvingo, Zimbabwe. The qualitative paradigm involving a case study design was considered the best approach for the current study. A case study design was chosen since the study of culture, gender and academic performance is ethnographic in nature hence the design is most suitable. A sample of thirty female students was conveniently sampled from a population of all part two to four female undergraduates at the institution. In-depth interviews and open-ended questionnaires were the tools which were used to collect data. This study revealed that the academic performance of university female students was greatly influenced by gender codes. The findings indicated that gender codes such as domestic chores and societal beliefs that females are home makers have negative effects on their academic performance. The study also revealed that students advocate emancipation from the bulk of domestic chores. This study recommends that the education system design a syllabus which includes gender issues that will be included in the mainstream curriculum where it can be considered as a subject. This may gradually initiate males in doing domestic chores without destroying the cultural fabric of the society.

Learners’ code-switching in English as a Second Language (ESL) lessons: perspectives of four secondary school teachers in Zimbabwe
Mareva, Rugare
Language Studies
Code-switching, English as a Second Language, Target Language Approaches, Methods
The study investigated the perceptions of secondary school teachers of English on code-switching by learners in the learning of English. The qualitative inquiry focused on one rural day, and one urban boarding school. The study employed interviews with four teachers from the two schools. Results show that from the perspective of the teachers, their ESL learners code-switched from English to the learners’ L1 as a learning tool, mainly to foster understanding among learners and between the learners and their teachers, and for other communicative and social functions. The teachers expressed an appreciation of their learners’ code-switching but there were also negative sentiments. The study recommends that language policy planners revisit the English-only policy in schools and consider adopting the endo-normative rather than the exo-normative model of English for the education system. The study also recommends that the responsible Ministry should hold workshops to sensitise teachers on how code-switching may be tolerated and exploited as a language learning tool. Furthermore, the study recommends that ESL teachers be guided by the Postmethod pedagogy, a sense of plausibility as well as the notion of relativism in their decisions on whether or not to allow their learners to code-switch. In addition, the inquiry recommends that the Zimbabwe Schools Examinations Council be sensitive to aspects of the local variety of English rather than set exo-normative models. Finally, the study recommends that further research be done on code-switching in school types which were not included in the sample for the present study.

Literature Studies
Self, Polarities, Journey, Consciousness, Salvation
There is an unending flow of life which enters and exists at its predetermined time. Very few may have tried to apprehend the purpose of life, endeavor to explore its existence in cosmos, attain tranquility and celestial bliss. In the luxurious peripheral phase, people may be busy with desire and aspiration but a shift from exterior to interior is indispensible to know the mystery of the universe. A voyage must be embarked on to arrive at the center to realize the true essence of life. This paper, through Hermann Hesse’s stunning novel Siddhartha, tries to explore the quintessential existence of human being, the reason of this puppet show, ultimate goal of the journey and the path through which Nirvana can be attained. It’s an endeavor to show how beautifully a German writer ignites the intellect and helps to know how the Transcendental Bliss be attained.

A Review of Multidimensional Studies on the Causes for Classroom Reticent
Gao, Lifen
Education Management
Classroom reticent; multidimensional studies; reticent causes
This study explores the causes for classroom reticent from four aspects: students, teachers, classroom environment and culture. It is found that: (1) student factors are the primary factors for learners to choose silence or participation; (2) Teachers are the key factors that affect students’ participation or retention in class; (3) Classroom environment is a potential active factor that affects students’ participation or silence in class; (4) Cultural value orientation has a profound impact on students’ classroom participation or silence. It is concluded that long or short reticent in class is closely related to the teachers’ teaching guidance style, teaching questioning strategies and teaching methods, as well as students’ language ability. At the same time, it is also closely related to the value judgment and orientation of “saving face”, “respecting teachers”, exam-oriented culture and “silence” behavior and habits in traditional culture.

China against Hollywood: Visible and Invisible Walls
Tian, Chuanmao
Social Sciences & Welfare Studies
China; Hollywood; film quota; protection month; translator’s intervention; criticism
Hollywood’s global expansion has been met with resistance in many countries. To resist Hollywood, some countries have developed their own way according to their tradition and relationship with the US in politics, economy, culture and diplomacy. Since the People’s Republic of China was founded, mainland China’s government policy, main-stream ideology, cultural values, economic status and relationship with the US have been ever changing. China is assumed to have adopted various measures to resist Hollywood. The current study suggests that game theory can provide a broad and useful guiding framework in analyzing the relationship, the strategic interactions in particular, between China and Hollywood. This article has discussed the interactions between China and Hollywood at the three stages, namely the planned-economy period (1949-1977), the transitional period of reform and opening-up (1978-1993) and the opening period of China’s film market to the West including Hollywood (1994-2009). It is argued that the game between China and Hollywood at each stage is characterized by the corresponding political and economic policies. As a result of this ongoing game, both parties will co-exist through cultural diversities and Hollywood’s expansion in China.

A Review of Domestic Empirical Studies on the Intercultural Perspective in Foreign Language Teaching

intercultural foreign language teaching (IFLT); intercultural communication competence; empirical studies
We reviewed all the empirical studies on the intercultural perspective in foreign language teaching, published between 2008 to 2018, on 6 Chinese major refereed journals of linguistics and foreign language education. 21 articles were identified after three rounds of screening. Each article was analyzed from three dimensions: research content, research participants and methodology. The results indicated that domestic studies were mainly involved in new pedagogical strategy application, instrument or model construction, and culture teaching assessment. Most of the research participants were Chinese university students. Only four studies included teachers or foreign students, one included high school students and one postgraduate. In terms of methodology, we found that Chinese scholars widely adopted a mixed methodology, by using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Finally, the study pointed out some weaknesses of the reviewed articles and put forward several suggestions to promote the foundations on the intercultural perspective in foreign language teaching.

Literature Studies
Sanguo Yanyi; Liu Bei's image; Brewitt-Taylor; Moss Roberts; Poetry translation
Sanguo Yanyi, a Chinese classical historical novel, contains a total of 207 poems. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the portrayal of Liu Bei in the English translations of the novel from the perspective of poetry translation. By examining the translations by Brewitt-Taylor and Moss Roberts, we aim to explore the nuances and variations in Liu Bei's image as portrayed in the poems. Selected examples are analyzed to highlight Liu Bei's image characteristics, including his adeptness, benevolent nature, and ambitious demeanor. The translations are compared in terms of their focus on readability versus fidelity to the original text. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the interpretation and representation of Liu Bei's character in English-language adaptations of Sanguo Yanyi, shedding light on the challenges and possibilities of poetry translation in a historical and cultural context.

Manwa, Lilian
Education Management
divorce, scholars, academic performance, family, marriage
The aim of this study was to establish the influence of divorce on academic performance of female scholars in Masvingo High Schools and Colleges, Zimbabwe. This interpretive inquiry involved a descriptive survey in order to find out the influence of divorce on the academic performance of female students. In-depth interviews and open-ended questionnaires were used to collect data from forty participants from ten high schools and two colleges. A sample of forty participants was purposively selected from all the institutions. Early teen marriages were established as one of the major causes of divorce as young brides and grooms fail to understand the level of commitment they are expected of. Drug abuse, infidelity, lack of communication, poverty and migration were the factors that caused divorce. The study revealed that divorce like death causes grief and pain to the people involved especially females. It was noted that it is one of the major causes of stress and negatively impacts on academic performance of female scholars. The findings also revealed that most of the study time is spend trying to solve or adjust to the new life style. The study recommends that both the international and national communities to seriously look into the effects of divorce on scholars with the aim of trying to reduce the rate of divorce and its effects on people involved. Legislations that are pro women should be in place as they also severely punish culprits who recklessly break their marriages.

Chaurasia, Niranjani
Education Management
Higher education, education
Higher education is at the top of the education pyramid and determines to a large extent the state of the education system of the country, especially its quality. As such it has a responsibility towards the whole education system as it has towards the whole of society. The World Conference on Higher Education has one of the missions and functions of higher education: “to contribute to the development and improvement of education at all levels, including through training of teachers.”Higher education has an important role to play through its graduates who should provide leadership roles in education as researchers, teachers, consultants and managers, who should create and apply new knowledge and innovations, and who should provide analytical perspectives on development problems and service to public and private sectors.Higher education through its research function could identify the preconditions for a supportive policy context for the development of basic education and explore techniques of mobilizing resources. Through its research, training and service programmes (the three principal functions), it could contribute to build national technical capacity and contribute to strengthening international solidarity. In particular, to promote basic education for all, higher education through its three principal functions, could improve access and equity in basic education, its quality and relevance and improve its efficiency and management.

Mourning Becomes Electra: Morbid Psychology under the "Mask"

mask; morbid psychology; emotional self-restrain; family; fate
By giving his main characters all with the "life-like mask", Eugene O'Neill in his play Mourning Becomes Electra aims to reveal the morbid psychology behind that people at that time were facing. O'Neill deepens the tragic effect of excessively emotional self-restraint by intentionally making the conflict happen between family members in a puritanical family, and further making it become a family's doomed and repeated fate. O'Neill presents the awkward situation but he fails to presents the way out; he indeed leaves the remedy to his audience.

The status of implementation of inclusive education in terms of availability and use of teaching and learning resources for retention of learners with special needs in Garissa County was unknown. Inclusive education refers to a situation where learners with disabilities and special educational needs have full membership in age-appropriate classes in their regular neighborhood schools with appropriate supplementary aids and support services. Records from Educational Assessment and Resource Centres (EARC) Garissa County revealed that there was a decline in the retention rate of learners` admitted. For example, in the year 2014, the retention rate was 37 learners (45.7%), 2015 (114 learners, 38.0%), 2016 (43 learners, 28.9%), 2017 (35 learners, 31.5%) and 2018 (41 learners, 23.7%). The purpose of the study was to assess the status of implementation of inclusive education practices for the retention of learners with special needs in regular primary schools in Dadaab sub-county. The specific objective of the study was to establish the extent to which the availability and use of teaching and learning resources affect the retention of learners with special needs in regular primary schools in Dadaab sub-county. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The target population comprised 26 head-teachers, 78 teachers, 300 learners with special needs, and 4 education officers. Saturated sampling technique was used to select 23 head-teachers, 70 teachers, 100 learners with special needs, and 4 education officers. Instruments for data collection were questionnaires, interview schedules and observation schedules. Quantitative data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, and mean. The findings of the study indicated that the availability and use of teaching and learning materials were inadequate (mean= 2.18). The study concluded that the low retention of learners with special needs as a result of the availability and use of teaching and learning materials to a small extent. The study recommended that the country and national government should ensure that there is adequate provision of teaching and learning resources to enhance learning for learners with special needs. The budget for materials should be enhanced. The study also recommends to non-governmental organizations to assist regular primary schools to access teaching and learning materials that can be used by learners with special needs.

Student Affairs Practitioners' Leadership on behalf of Undocumented College Students in the USA
Aguirre, Hilda Cecilia Contreras
Education Management
Undocumented Students, Student Affairs, US
The United States is considered a country of immigrants that has historically hosted people from all over the world. Oftentimes, immigrants struggle to find and shape an American identity, especially when it comes to undocumented youth (Gonzales, 2008). New waves of immigrants to this country trigger feelings of fear concerning the loss of national identity and the lack of cultural incompatibility (Kim & Díaz, 2013a). In this sense, the emergence of anti-immigration attitudes has been in the political, social, and economic agenda over the last years. As a result, postsecondary institutions have been constantly looking for accomplishing social progress and growth (McDermott, 1973); however, there are still gaps to fill in at institutions with respect to create a welcome atmosphere and campus-wide acceptance for all students. In particular, undocumented students which the National Immigration Law Center defined as “a foreign national who: (1) entered the United States without inspection or with fraudulent documents; or (2) entered legally as a nonimmigrant but then violated the terms of his or her status and remained in the United States without authorization” (as cited in Educators for Fair Consideration, 2019) face socioeconomic and institutional barriers. Therefore, it deems necessary to find appropriate services and allocate resources that help undocumented students cope with difficulties concerning both their college adjustment and personal struggles reaching a holistic development (Gildersleeve &Ranero, 2010). The purpose of this paper is to address the topic of undocumented students as it relates to their college persistence. In particular, four leadership theories help highlight the important role of student affairs practitioners to become advocates and seek social justice for this unique student population. The organization of the manuscript encompasses the following sections. First, a brief literature review concerning federal and state legislation on undocumented students is presented. Then, an overview of student affairs practitioners’ importance to promote a positive college climate and better serve this student population is addressed. The aforementioned section includes four leadership theories, which student affairs professionals could adopt. Next, an outline addressing the social justice aspect on behalf of undocumented students is introduced. Finally, a section covering recommendations for student affairs professionals is proposed yielding the conclusion.

The Inside Outsiders in The Stranger and Day
Han, Wenjie
Literature Studies
the absurd, death, existentialism, The Strange, Day
The Stranger by Albert Camus and Day (The Accident) by Elie Wiesel are two of masterpieces in the twentieth century. Camus is acknowledged as an existentialist, whose works propose and elucidate the notion of the “absurd” of that generation, while Wiesel is typically identified as a Holocaust writer who has attempted in varying ways to find a voice with which to articulate the experience of the final solution (Estess, 1976). In fact, critics argued that Camus’ absurd philosophy has impacted greatly on Wiesel for whom Auschwitz signifies the absurdity of human and divine behaviour and the breakdown of the Covenant and the Jewish spirit. Instead of interpreting the image of the absurd as indifferent outsiders in classical criticism, this article argues that the two protagonists, Meursault and Eliezer are inside outsiders from the perspective of the “absurd” and the text itself; and further explores the shared theme "death" involved in these two works.

Individual and Contextual Factors Associated with Married Women’s HIV Status in India, National Family Health Survey- 3

Married women; HIV; India
There are increasing concerns related to feminization of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in India especially its showing up among married women. Nuances of HIV related risk and vulnerability are myriad among them (married women) who are either oblivious to their partner’s risk behavior, unaware of their partners’ or own sero-status and often cannot negotiate safer sex. Dearth of evidence on HIV prevention programs indicating gendered outcomes further obscures the situation. National Family Health Survey- 3 data of India were reviewed to identify individual and familial correlates in their marital families, which might be associated with the HIV status among married women in India. Bivariate and regression methods were used. Findings indicated key factors which add to the vulnerability of married women’s risk-proneness to contract HIV. It calls for more socio-behavioral and implementation research addressing HIV transmission and prevention among married women in India, where typically the thrust has been mostly on HIV high risk populations like female sex workers, injecting drug users and men who have sex with men.

Assessment of Nature Tourism Potential, in Rural Development in West Wollega Zone in The Case of Sayo Nole and Nole Kaba Districts, Ethiopia

Developmental Studies
Tourism, Development, Community
Tourism is not just the temporary movement of people to destinations outside their normal places. Tourism includes many geographic, economic, environmental, social, cultural and political dimensions. A tourism industry has a strong relationship with those dimensions because of its dependency and impact on it, and the interests of its stakeholders (Kauffmann 2008).As stated by Sinha (2007) the study of tourism is the study of people away from their usual habitat of the establishments which responds to the requirement of travelers and the impact of that they have on the economic physical and social well-being of their hosts. Tourism is an attractive tool for economic development, specifically in the developing world. Viewed as an export industry of three Gs -- "get them in, get their Money, and get them out" – tourism has assisted many developing countries to move away from a dependency on agriculture and manufacturing (Tooman, 1997. Chosen forits ability to bring in needed foreign exchange earnings, income and employment, tourism has become a popular addition to economic development policies in many African, Asian, South and Central American countries. Although tourism seems to beading substantially to the economic growth of many of these regions, many developing countries are not reaping full benefits from tourism (Vaugeois, 1990).Tourism in Ethiopia dates back to the pre-Axumite period when the first illustrated travel guides to Ethiopia can be found in the friezes of the pyramids and ancient sites of Egypt. These depicted travels to the land of Punt, which the Egyptians knew was the source of the Nile, and where they traded for gold, incense, ivory and slaves. The fourth century Persian historian Mani described the Kingdom of Axum as being one of the four great empires of the world, ranking it alongside China, Persia and Rome (World Bank, 2006). Modern tourism in Ethiopia can be said to have started with the formation of a government body to develop and control it in 1961: The Ethiopian Tourist Organization (Y.Mulualem, 2010).

Bilateral Investment Treaty Negotiations between India and U.S: Problems and Prospects

Trade & Commerce
International trade, International Cooperation, Indo-US Trade Ties
Relationship between U.S. and India is at the best phase, especially after former unequivocal support in NSG (Nuclear Supply Group) and helping inclusion in MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime). The relationship between two oldest and biggest democracies has matured under the headship of Mr. Barak Obama as President and Mr. Nardendra Modi as prime minister. In the recent visit of Indian prime minister, the warm gesture shown by U.S. congress members have further cemented the strength of tie up between two nations. However, despite great chemistry between two nation and its leaders from last many years, both have failed to enter into Bilateral Investment Treaty. India is having Bilateral Investment treaty with more than 80 countries including U.K. and Russia, of which 72 treaties are operational. [1] U.S. is having Bilateral Investment treaties with more than 46 countries including Russia and Bangladesh.[2] Since 2008, the two countries have been engaged in sporadic discussions to conclude the Investment treaty. Negotiations on its wording, based on each country’s revised model treaty texts, will begin soon. Both the leaders Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S President Barack Obama affirmed their mutual commitment to facilitating increased bilateral investment flows and fostering an open and predictable climate for investment many a times , But consensus has not been reached till today on certain term and conditions. In the absence of BIT , the rights of investors of both the countries are at the stake. Further, MFN or nationality treatment clause cannot be invoked or granted in the event of any regulatory or other action. Obligations imposed by BIT to protect interest of foreign investors are absent. Further, after losing its first Investment Treaty Arbitration (ITA) claim in 2012 against White Industries, an Australian company and pending 17 cases, India has recently adopted new BIT in 2015 . It also has reflections of pending claims of Vodafone and other cases involving Intellectual Property Rights( Hereinafter refereed as IPR) and the cases of compulsory licences. Health is one of the most important assets of human being and can be viewed as prerequisite for individual and national development. It is popular saying in Indian Society since ancient times ‘Health is the wealth’. It is true even today. The expansion of Yoga, meditation and modern health technology through mass-media, people are being more and more aware toward their health. Our government is also aware for wellbeing of health of our every individual including senior citizens. Senior citizens are the assets and heritage of our society as they have a long experience of socio-economic, cultural and environment issues. Society cares their health and lives and makes them conscious towards their health. Their health depends on their consciousness. But the health consciousness among senior citizens is a complex phenomenon and heterogeneous process determined by a number of physical, emotional, biological and socio-cultural factors. It is a subjective mental attention toward one’s health, hygiene and environment.

core competency, high school English, school-based curriculum
With the deepening of the concept of "core competency", the teaching of English in Chinese high schools has gradually shifted from focusing on students' achievement to focusing on students' competency. The school-based curriculum, as an important supplement to high school teaching, plays a key role in improving the English core competency of high school students. Based on this, this paper firstly analyzes the background of Chinese high school English teaching under core competency and the significance of developing a school-based curriculum for high school English; secondly, effective development strategies will be proposed based on the basic ideas of high school English school-based curriculum design. It is hoped that the analysis in this paper will provide a reference for promoting the development and practice of a school-based curriculum for high school English in China.

Socio-pragmatic Deficiency in E.Requests
Ali, Shurooq Abboodi
Linguistics
Academic request, authentic data, directness level, EFL context, e-mail corpus, imposition level, socio-pragmatics, student-professor interaction
The speech act of request is face-threatening by nature and an inappropriate request can cause offence to the hearer, particularly when s/he has higher authority (Economidou-Kogetsidis, 2011). E-mail is frequently used to facilitate communication between student and professor in Iraq. Iraqi EFL (English as a foreign language) learners face pragmatic difficulty in making proper requests to individuals of higher authority via e-mail. Some studies have been conducted on Arab EFL learners to uncover the pragmatic behaviour of these learners in real-life requests using elicited data. This research fills a gap in Inter-language Pragmatics (ILP) literature in that it investigates the use of academic request in three diverse imposition levels (low, medium, and high) by Iraqi EFL learners when they communicate with their professors via e-mail. This study uses authentic data consists of 200 e-mails related to academic requests sent by Iraqi EFL learners to their professors. Besides, the study uses the CCSARP (cross-cultural speech act realisation project) originally proposed by Blum-Kulka, House, and Kasper (1989) and modified later by Biesenbach-Lucas (2007). Qualitative and quantitative analyses are used to analyse the data. The findings reveal that Iraqi EFL learners primarily use direct strategy in all types of request impositions by e-mail. These learners have socio-pragmatic deficiency in high imposition requests; that is, they are mainly direct with their professors in requests call for conventional indirectness to be acceptable pragmatically.

Uniformity and Diversity of Components of Teacher Education

Education Management
Teacher Education, Diversity, Uniformity, NCFTE (National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education), NCF (National Curriculum Framework), NCFSE (National Curriculum Framework for School Education)
It was the suggestion of the National Education Commission (1964-66) that investment for teacher education can return in rich surpluses because the fiscal resources essential are small when compared to the resulting developments in the upbringing of masses. Today, it is an imperative to prepare dynamic teachers. Therefore, skill development programmes for in-service and teacher trainees should be ornamented with the teaching-learning skills, real mode internship, pedagogical knowledge with application, multi-lingual and multicultural classroom management techniques and ICT based technologies. These conditions are fulfilled by implementing the components of teacher education with uniformity in knowledge and diversity in functioning. The universal and local aspects of teacher education programs might be meaningful for the environment of training. This research article is trying to ascertain their devotion to global trends versus the impact of native circumstances and cultures. Teacher Education Curriculum-1978 very rightly emphasized on the fortune of the school curriculum which is affected by the teacher education curriculum.

Oroonoko: An Analysis of Treason in Behn’s Anglo-African Sojourn

Human history rests on specific traits of life. Out of these, ‘trust’ is counted as the most endeared, expensive, difficult to maintain as well as effervescent in nature. The phrase ‘Time once gone, never comes back’ takes us to an equally sensitive world of moral decorum where ‘trust once lost is seldom or never restored’. The paper is a partial attempt to analyse the element of betrayal ranging from familial ties to the national ones. Interestingly, the protagonist is both the subject and the object of treason and his fate is a recoil action of his own past deeds which never occurred to his ownself as ugly and inhuman. His kaleidoscopic life-events are the best whip-lashes to remind him of his past actions and teach him the intensity of the pain of separation from one’s own loved ones and one’s own land.

For the deaf, ineffective communication is a major problem especially when onset of profound deafness takes places at an early age before language is acquired. At school, the language of classroom communication not only affects the child’s development but also influences ability to learn other curriculum contents. Pointing out reasons for failure by deaf children to compete favorably with their hearing peers, Johnson et al (1989) has indicated that the central problem on deaf education is embedded in the lack of an appropriate language of classroom communication. For a long time education for the deaf was conducted through the oral approach. It was later realized that this oral approach did not avail curriculum content to the deaf learners. In the 1980’s Total Communication arose as one of the solutions. According to Adoyo (2004), Total Communication was misunderstood for Simultaneous Communication, a communication system in which speech and sign are produced at the same time (Lane, Hoffmister & Bahan, 1996). Although SC has been used in Kenya for all these years, it has not produced the predicated large-scale improvement. In this study, an attempt was made to establish the capacity of SC to enhance understanding and to facilitate information processing. The investigation was carried out through an examination of the extent to which the spoken and signed messages were equivalent in meaning. The research question was: To what extent do teachers of the deaf maintain one-one, sign to-voice ratio during Simultaneous Communication transmission and to what degree is the spoken and signed message equivalent semantically?

Skopos theory; trademark translation; translation strategy
International trade is increasing due to the rapid development of globalization. Many businesses target foreign markets, so trademark translation plays an important role in the promotion and sales of goods in those foreign markets. Skopos theory provides strong theoretical support for trademark translation. This paper examines the manifestation of the three principles of the Skopos theory in trademark translation and discusses the guiding role of the Skopos theory for trademark translation strategy from four aspects: literal translation, transliteration, transliteration and translation, and conversion. At the same time, it explores the practical significance of trademark translation and provides a reference for future trademark translation practice.

Teaching-Learning Strategies, Learners with Special Needs, Special Education
The national education system has been characterised by inadequate educational management practices and facilities that do not respond well to the challenges faced by Learners with Special Needs (LWSNs). These learners are gradually and deliberately pushed out of the school system because schools are not sensitive to their learning styles and background. The purpose of this study was therefore to assess the extent to which inclusive teaching-learning strategies were employed to meet academic needs of learners with special needs in public primary schools in Kakamega East Sub-county. The study objective was to; determine the extent to which the teaching and learning strategies were employed to meet the academic needs of learners with special needs in primary schools. The study was based on the theory of Normalisation and it made use of the descriptive survey research design. The target population was 90 head teachers, 999 teachers and one Educational Assessment and Resource Centre (EARC) coordinator. The schools were stratified according to zones and simple random sampling was used to select, 18 head teachers and 200 teachers, while the EARC coordinator was selected by the purposive sampling technique. Instruments for data collection were the questionnaires, interview schedules and document analysis. Content validity was used to determine the validity of the research instruments while the test-re-test method was used to test reliability using the Pearson Product moment of correlation coefficient (r) value. Data was then analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics and the results were presented in form of frequency tables. The research findings revealed that teachers lack relevant skills to meet the academic needs of LWSNs and they rarely address learners’ needs through the individualised education programmes (IEP). The researcher recommended that regular inspections should be carried out in schools as a follow up measure of ensuring that inclusive education and its management practices are implemented to the latter. Teachers who are not trained in special needs education (SNE) should be given an opportunity to undergo training so as to equip them with the necessary skills and attitudes towards LWSNs. IEP need to be developed for every learner with specialneeds in learning, learners with special needs need to be involved in class activities.

Education Management
Education, Motivation, push-pull theory, curriculum development
The focus of this research was to explore what motivational factors that push or pull university students to join practical knowledge programs. The study employed a qualitative method to collect data from 100 third-year students at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) of the University of Dar Es Salaam. The study found that both pushandpull trigger pointsare motivational factors for students to join a knowledge program that incorporates strong practical components. The implication is that to ensure that graduates can face the requirements of today’s job markets the university must balance theoretical knowledge withopportunities for practical experience. Thus, as the university revises its curriculum it is essential to give careful considerations to both push and pull factors as critical elements to enhance the university’s educational objectives. This studyprovides a first look at push-pull factorsand its associated intervening factors that motivate students to advance their learning. As such it provides a model for necessary subsequent studies to be conducted for other University faculties to identify what push-and-pull factors impact students in their respective disciplines. In addition, further research is warranted into motivational variances that may exist between male and female students.

With the further development of economic globalization and information technology, e-commerce has won great support from enterprises. Meanwhile, cross-border e-commerce has broken the traditional form of trade, greatly saving trade costs for enterprises. Therefore, with the rapid growth of cross-border e-commerce, foreign companies and e-commerce enterprises have an increasingly urgent demand for business English talents. So it is necessary for colleges and universities to explore a new business English training mode to train some talents who can better promote economic development based on China’s economic demand.

The aim of the study was to observe whether there is a relationship between personal effectiveness, organizational culture and work-related stress among teachers. The study also aimed to observe the difference between teachers working in different institutions (viz., CBSE, ISC, UG, & PG) with respect to the same. Personal Effectiveness Scale – Teachers (Pareek, 2001), Organizational Culture Profile (Pareek, 2003) and Stress Indicator Tool (Kelly, 2004) were administered to a sample of 320 teachers working in CBSE schools (n=80); ISC schools (n=80); under-graduate colleges (n=80); and post-graduate colleges (n=80) who were selected through a purposive sampling technique. Results indicated significant differences between teachers working in different institutions with respect to the dimensions of organizational culture (p<0.05). The teachers working in CBSE institutions reported more favourable perception of their organizational culture than those working in ISC, UG or PG institutions. Results also indicated that significant correlations were observed between the dimensions of self-disclosure, proaction, authenticity and confrontation (p<0.05) among the CBSE, ISC, UG, and PG teachers. This study highlights the importance of periodic self-assessment to enhance effective work performance of teachers thereby improving the productivity and work culture of the educational organization.

international Sinology; T’oung Pao; Confucianism; intercultural communication
The paper studies the articles on Confucianism which have been published in the column of “Articles de Fond” in T’oung Pao, a famous international Sinology journal, since the 20th century. The paper aims to sort out and comment on the translation and introduction of Confucian works and ideas in T’oung Pao, especially various versions of Confucian classics. And by summarizing the different characteristics of Confucianism-related research in the perspectives and contents in different historical periods, it discusses the intercultural communication media of Confucianism, aiming to further explore how to continue to promote the international communication of Chinese culture under the background of the “going out” strategy of Chinese culture. The findings are as follows: one is that the high-quality Sinology journals represented by T’oung Pao are an important form of media for overseas Confucianism communication. At the same time, it is an important topic for researchers engaged in cross-cultural work in the new era to seek the organic combination of traditional and contemporary media; the other is that we can make full use of the online network platform to promote some Sinology journals and articles on Confucianism published in them, and actively seek a new path and carrier of intercultural communication.

Kipchak language, manuscript, Turks, ethnic realities
The purpose of our work was to analyze the ethnic realities of the Kipchak language in order to establish its similarities and differences with modern Turkic languages for which this medieval language was a proto-language. The written medieval manuscript in Arabic “Al-Tuhfa al-Zakiyya fi al-Lugha al-Turkiyyah” (Genuine wonder about the Turkish language) was one of the most important and most valuable source for studying the Kipchak language. The main feature of the work was that the original version was written in the Kipchak, as the anonymous author pointed out on the first page of the manuscript, stored in Istanbul, in the Beyazit state library. When studying objects that were far apart from each other in a temporary sense, such as medieval and modern languages, we used the comparative-historical method, and as a result concluded that in some cases there were only phonetic differences, while the syntactic and semantic commonality of lexical and phraseological units persisted. To classify ethnic realities, the statistical method of analysis was used. Ethnographic, cultural and mental realities testified to direct kinship and a single nomadic culture of the speakers of the languages of this group and provided an opportunity to restore the historical stages of the development of the Turkic languages from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Speech act of advice, written signs, gender, identity, age
Giving advice refers to an attempt by the speaker to express what the addressee should do in a particular situation or what is good for him/her. It is also a feature of making social relations and communications move smoothly and become stronger. The current study aims to investigate the strategies of the speech act of advice by old females and males for the younger generation in written signs. Comparison is made between old females and males regarding their pragmatic use of advice and the way they are manifested in expressing gender identity differences. The sample of the study consists of (30) written signs of advice divided equally between the two gender groups. Hinkel’s (1997) classification of the strategies for perceiving the speech act of advice is adopted to code the data of the current study. The results show that females’ advice-giving strategies are more varied than males although the two gender groups rely heavily on one basic strategy. Besides, age, as another social variable, appears to have a major role in shaping the strategy used by old people in giving advice and that gender identity is best reflected in lexical choices of emotional words, especially by females.

word stress, word production, word perception, acquisition of parameters, metrical phonology, Iraqi learners
This study investigates the acquisition of the parameters of word stress production and perception by 10 Iraqi learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). It aims at investigating Iraqi learners’ difficulties in resetting the parameters of word stress production and perception in L2. Two experiments are conducted to test the learners’ production and perception of word stress in isolation and in sentences. The first experiment is the production test and the second one is the perception test. The learners’ responses of word stress in both experimental tasks are elicited manually and analysed according to [7] model of metrical parameters which is used to investigate the acquisition of parameters of word stress production and perception by Iraqi learners. The findings reveal that Iraqi EFL learners are able to reset the parameters of L2 but even though they failed in resetting all the parameters completely. Besides, the learners used more ranking level kinds of the parameters in the perception task than in the production task which may cause Iraqi learners assign wrongly the word stress placement.

Natural selection intensity, Fertility, Mortality, Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra
The selection intensity indices were calculated based one demographic information pertaining to fertility and mortality among the four Varnas of Lucknow population. The highest value of Crow’s index is observed in Kshartiya (0.494934) where as lowest in Brahmins (0.365809). Johnston and Kensinger index varies from 0.3866 among Brahmins to 0.5294 among Kshtiya. The total index of opportunity (Crow’s) is in the order Brahmin > Vaishya > Shudra > Kshtirya. However the mortality component is more in Kshtirya and Vaishyas reflecting the accessibility of poor medical facilities and socio-economic condition. Another reason may be due to the delay in care seeking practices.

Subaltern Writing in Hag-Seed

Hag-Seed; The Tempest; power; subaltern; women
Hag-Seed is a re-imagining story of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' written by Margaret Atwood, a famous Canadian writer. Hag-seed is a successful adaptation in The Hogarth Shakespeare Project organized by Hogarth Press. In this novel, Atwood adopts the form “play in play” to recur the whole scene of The Tempest. Through the depictions of minor characters in a prison, the novel presents the dilemma and struggle of marginalized protagonists in front of the power. In the novel, the play directed by Felix criticizes the power abuse and the social oppression suffered by the lower classes and women. Atwood's rewriting of The Tempest aims to reveal the loss of the humanistic concerns in modern society and advocate making “the other” acquire their rights to free speech.

This paper devotes an introduction of scientific survey of Francis Buchanan ‘Hamilton’. Science is called the greatest triumph of the human mind over nature. Natural sciences focused attention on the investigation of the Indian environment and even placed Indians themselves towards scrutiny & their will themselves never be any great enthusiasm for belonging to a society which is not going forward, our culture is full of unformulated rules of conventional behaviour, and we have placed a perfectly absurd value on the ability to confirm to those rules & thus to preserve the whole system whose behaviour they are supposed to regulate. Just like that a Scottish physician Buchanan ‘Hamilton’ recognised for making significant contributions as a Geographer, zoologist, Botanist & as a historian while living in India.

Restructuring, Globalization, Localization, Teacher Education
Globalization is a feeling that the individual is not only a member of his/her state, but a citizen of the world and subsequently teacher education should reflect this global outlook. Now the question arises: How teachers' education can be transformed from a traditional country bound training program to a new globalized teachers’ education? One of the global challenges which are appearing in this context is to have a gestalt development of any country with all its special cultural identity together with globalization. Only globalization of education is inadequate without localization to pay attention towards the preserving of cultures. It should treat each unique culture and society with due respect, realizing that global education is not only learning about all innovations occurred globally, but also studying different cultures of the world and maintaining them as a cultural heritage of universe. This paper is an attempt to analyze the present position of teacher education in the context of globalization and to explore the need and ways to restructure and redefine teacher education with reference to globalization and localization. It concludes that restructuring teachers' education with reference to globalization and localization is an urgent need so that we may get such teachers who not only will possess world class knowledge but also right attitude to work and live with open mindedness, and will take them forward in global scenario for the welfare of mankind.

Women education, girls’ empowerment, educational status of Indian women
Taught women are fit for bringing financial changes. The constitution of every single popularity based countrie, including India, grantees equivalent rights to both men and women. Essential training is currently a major right. At the point when a lady (or a young lady) is guaranteed of her rights, the general public everywhere is guaranteed of its supportability. India's Constitution ensures free grade school training for both young men and young women up to age 14. This objective has been over and over reconfirmed, yet essential instruction in India is not widespread. By and large, the education rate for women is 39 percent versus 64 percent for men with under 40 percent of the 330 million women matured seven or more being proficient, as indicated by the 1991 evaluation, which implies today there are more than 200 million ignorant women in India. This paper assesses is a relevant analysis on the women training in India.

Being brought up under certain circumstances, a child may become an egoist. If he is not capable to adjust himself to some situations, he may destroy himself by certain unpleasant problems. In George Eliot's novel Daniel Deronda, Gwendolen, an inborn egoist is not probably able to cope with some situations mainly after her marriage. As a matter of fact, she has been increasingly arrogant, rebellious, heartless, disapproving, unhappy. Under such a situation she has contributed to her husband, Grandcourt’s drowning. Obviously, after her husband’s death, her future is dark for her. so, it can be admitted that she has ruined herself.

attending a University or college by the means of Fraudulence; prevention and control mechanism; loopholes; plugging loopholes
The incident of “attending a University or college by the means of Fraudulence” has not only trampled on the bottom line of educational fairness and social justice but also the dignity of national laws and administrative regulations. There are three main reasons for the repeated occurrence of “attending a college by the means of Fraudulence”: firstly, the lack of strict audit in the admission process of college entrance examination; secondly, the lack of strict review in the admission process of college freshmen; thirdly, the lack of strict supervision in the cultivation process of college talents. In order to effectively prevent the recurrence of the incident of “attending a University or college by the means of Fraudulence”, education administration should join with universities and social third-party organizations to plug the loopholes in the admission process of college entrance examination with systematic audit mechanism, the loopholes in the admission process of new students in universities with systematic review mechanism, and the loopholes in the cultivation of talents in universities with systematic supervision mechanism.

Learning of Mathematical Concepts in Relation to Spatial Ability and Problem Solving Skills among Secondary School Pupils
Shakila, J.
Education Management
Learning Mathematical Concepts, Problem Solving Skills, Secondary School Pupils
Mathematics with all its branches plays an important role in everyday life. It is created to investigate the whole range of knowledge. Learning mathematics is basically a constructive process, which means that pupils gather, discover, create mathematical knowledge and skills mainly in the course of some social activity that has purpose consequently mathematics classroom instruction should move away from the information transmission model. Meaningful and authentic context should play a crucial role in mathematics learning and teaching, therefore, we need an integrated approach to mathematics teaching.Problem solving is an integral part of developmental activities and provides opportunities for children to practice what they have learned by applying their learning situations. The amount of practice needed by any learner is reduced if he understands the concepts and skills to be practiced. How can we make our students good problem solvers in mathematics? This is possible only when we make mathematics education more meaningful and interesting. Mathematical abilities like logical thinking, rational reasoning, concentration of mind, orderly presentation, precision and accuracy, analytical and inductive skills, and above all general problem solving abilities. So the present study is intended to learning of mathematical concepts in relation to problem solving skills among secondary school pupils.

Present study is a process to find out the effect of internet usage on the academic achievement of adolescents of West Bengal, specifically on the students of Higher Secondary level under the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education. To study the impact thoroughly the investigator divided internet usage into three categories- Educational usage, Communicational usage and Recreational usage. Intending to fetch out the relationship of different types of internet usage with students’ academic achievement as well as the gender difference regarding the internet usage, the researcher formulated some null hypotheses. To go through this study the investigator administered an internet usage questionnaire on 138 class XI students, selected by purposive sampling method from different schools under WBCHSE. Percentage of marks obtained by the adolescents in Madhyamik examination was treated as the academic achievement by them. The investigator used Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and Independent Sample‘t’ test for testing the hypotheses. By the end of the study it was seen that Educational usage and Communicational usage of internet had no effect on their academic achievements, but there was negative effect of Recreational internet usage on their academic achievement. Also, boys and girls differed significantly in respect to their different internet usage.

An Ecological Panorama on How Parental Involvement Affects Academic Achievement of Secondary School Pupils in Masvingo

Education Management
Parental Involvement; Academic Achievement; Masvingo
This study explored the influence of an ecological perspective on the parental involvement on secondary school pupil’s academic performance. It was influenced by Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. A qualitative research was adopted through an interpretivist paradigm. The research participants comprised of two teachers and five parents. The research instrument used was the one to one interviews with the both the teachers and the parents. A thematic data analysis was used to analyse data solicited from the research participants. Findings from the teachers revealed that some parents were partially involved in the learning of their pupils and some pupils were found not to be doing their homework. Ultimately, this derailed the whole learning process. In addition diverse sentiments were outlined by the parents including the claim that it was the teachers’ obligation to ensure that children were consistently assisted by the teachers. Their argument was based on the understanding that parents are paying full fees, therefore they expect the best out of their money. Some parents indicated that, as much as they would want to assist their children, they are to some extent incapacitated The researcher recommended that if the parents are unable to assist their children, they should find other means to do so . The same applies with teachers who are encouraged to reconsider ways of assisting children who cannot get parental assistance.

The Peer group is composed of equal status, where students within a given peer group are of the same age and have the same social status. The performance task is any learning activity or assessment that asks students to perform to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding, and proficiency. Performance tasks as part of the student’s performance in school, probably this might be influenced by peers of the students. The study used a descriptive design to determine the influence of peer on the performance task of the students. A total of 243 Senior High students of Jagobiao National High School answered the Likert scale questionnaire, an instrument used by the researcher to conduct the study. The study used weighted mean and chi-square to determine whether peer influence has an association with students’ performance tasks. The results show that peers can influence students’ performance tasks. It was shown in the study that students get a low grade from skipping classes together with their peers. The study concluded that there is an association between peer influence and academic performance of the students. Therefore, peer plays a big role in student’s academic engagement and academic success.

Parental involvement, Academic performance, Pupils, Primary school, Educational activities, Ainabkoi
Most public schools in Kenya post poor results amid claims that parents are not supportive of their children’s educational activities at school. While research has shown that parental involvement in primary schools is a significant contributor to the mental capacity, social and cognitive behaviour of students, public primary schools in Ainabkoi sub-county are yet to achieve. This paper draws our attention to a study that was conducted in the sub-county to investigate the relationship between parental involvement in pupils’ educational activities at school and their academic performance in public primary schools. This study was guided by Type 3 Epstein’s model of the six types of parent involvement as developed by Joyce Epstein. The study adopted ex-post facto research design and considered a target population of 2404 Class 8 pupils and 61 class teachers from which 331 Class eight pupils and 61 teachers were drawn using stratified random sampling and census approach, respectively. Questionnaire and interview schedule were used for data collection which was later analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics were analyzed in the form of percentages and means. Chi-square was used to test the hypotheses of the study. The found out that there was a positive and significant relationship between parental participation in educational activities at school(X2=22.619; p=0.001) and pupils’ academic performance in Ainakboi Sub County. Qualitative data were analyzed using a thematic framework. The study concluded that parental involvement in educational activities in school was positively related to academic performance. The study recommended that the government should sensitize parents on involvement in their children’s school activities through policy development to improve their academic performance.

Protagonists’ Predicament in Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants”
Shang, Shiqi
Literature Studies
Hills like White Elephants, Hemingway, Predicament, Stylistic Analysis
Hills Like White Elephants is one of the short stories written by American writer Ernest Hemingway, which is mainly about conversations between an American man and a girl who are arguing about whether she should receive an abortion procedure when waiting for an express train from Barcelona to Madrid. This paper aims to analyse the protagonists’ predicament through stylistics of fiction as a research perspective and comes to a conclusion that facing the disillusion of traditional values and the dysfunction of original morality under the attack of wars, the protagonists are the representatives of “the lost generation” who suffers the trauma and wanders around the world, only to find out there’s no corner for them to rest and elude away the loneliness.

Role of the High School Teachers in Developing Values
Bharathi, A.
Education Management
Educational values, Social values, academic attitude
Value is such a code of conduct or the incorporation of virtue following which, man develops his personality and springs up being powerful and trustworthy in society. Values are guiding principles or standards of behaviour which are regarded desirable, important and held in high esteem by a particular society in which a person lives. Values are important for bringing desirable changes in an individual. The national policy on education (1986) calls for an emphasis on development of science and technology and the “cultivation of personal and social values” so that “the educational system produces young men and women of character and ability committed to national services”. Transmission of human values is to be made feasible by the pivotal role played by the teacher in the arena. Teacher is the right person to develop awareness and sensitivity of duties and values amongst the children. A teacher must succeed in conveying the larger ideals of service to the community, virtues of tolerance and respect for all faiths, the importance of character and the value of our heritage and culture. An efficient teacher aims at enlightening the minds and illumining the hearts of individual. Holistic development of a student is incomplete if moral values are neglected. As it is observed in the present times that immoral and antisocial behaviour is increasing among the students, it turns out to be a matter of great concern because decrease in moral values among school children greatly hamper the social fabrication and society as well. Education is knowledge based but values are not implemented now a days. So education should fulfill aims and at the same time inculcate values. Students are influenced by peer groups, parents, teachers and they learn certain values in an informal way. But the single largest influence on the student is the educational curriculum. The curricular requirements of the school should aim at not only imparting knowledge and language information but also a judicious combination of values that have a bearing on the future life of the students. The present study is an attempt to understand the role played by the high school teachers in developing values among students, at Narayankhed mandal, Medak district, Telangana state. 100 teachers randomly selected from 15 Government and private schools constitute the sample. An opinionnaire, with items divided under 5 major areas, is the tool used for administration. Scoring is done based on a two point scale. Percentages, mean, standard deviation and critical ratio are used for analysing the data.

Education Management
Contemporary management, management styles, team building, motivational programmes, Secondary schools, Benue state, Nigeria
The world is undergoing nothing less than a major revolution in the way people spend their time and thought on the future of their endeavors. Perhaps, the most important mental and spiritual principle ever discovered is that you become what you think about most time and the actions and inactions you put in place in managing the resources available to you. In view of the fact that resources abound everywhere, they may have little or no value unless you pull out the essentials peculiar to your needs and apply it appropriately. The management of these resources can make you happy or sad, distracted or depressed, popular or unpopular, confident or insecure, positive or negative, successful or unsuccessful, powerful or powerless, victim or victor, a hero or a coward. The management style adopted by an executive determines the level employees feel and the seeds of success that will be planted. As the world moves from the era of things to the mental age, it will be only those that maximally apply the most impressing management principles that will scale the navigational flexibilities of our time. It is on the strength of this that this study is designed conceptually to unveil issues of contemporary management of secondary schools in Benue state of Nigeria. The paper is therefore structured in the following sub-headings: introduction, types of management styles, types of motivational programmes in the workplace, team building, and tips for team building, challenges of teamwork and a conclusion is drawn.

Developmental Studies
Collaboration Trend, Local; domestic and international collaboration, Scientometric study, Scientometric tools, Author collaboration
Collaboration trend among researchers can take many forms. One of the most tangible forms of this collaboration is co-authorship. Over the decades the multiple-author publication, frequently referred to as a co-authored publication, has been used as a basic counting unit to measure collaborative activity. In order to identify the collaborative trend in speech, language and hearing science three leading journals such as Journal of Speech, Language and Hearing Research, published by American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA), Asia Pacific Journal of Speech, Language and Hearing and Journal of the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (JAIISH). A total of 905 articles were published in these three journals during the period of 2009-2013 has been considered for the study. Scienctometric tools such as Authorship pattern Collaborative Author Index, Degree of Collaboration. Collaboration Index, Collaborative Coefficient and Modified Collaborative Coefficient, Local collaborative index, Domestic collaborative index, International collaborative Index were used. The study shows that there exists collaborative research in speech, language and hearing sciences journals irrespective of the origin of the journal. The local collaboration of authors was more rather than domestic and international collaboration among the authors. The study also shows that there is no significant difference in collaboration in the domain of speech or language or hearing and Local collaboration persist in the domain of speech or language or hearing.

A Review of Studies on the Washback Effect of National Matriculation English Test (NMET) in China (2011-2020)
Rong, Li
Yi, Peng
Education Management
College Entrance Examination English; Washback Effect; NMET
This paper reviews the washback studies in National Matriculation English Test (NMET) in the past decade (2011-2020). There are 36 Chinese works of literature collected from CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), all of which are searched by keywords "National Matriculation English Test "(NMET) and "washback effect". And This literature is divided into two levels: micro level and macro level. The micro-level includes 5 categories, and the macro-level includes 3 categories. After analyzing and discussing, the researcher finds that: (1) The research has increased sharply before 2018 and is greatly influenced by policies; (2) The proportion of empirical research is equal to that of non-material research, which is dominated by empirical research at present; (3) The research mainly involves the washback effect of NMET, its reform and test typesetting at the macro level; Micro-level listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar filling washback. Through the analysis, it is found that the main problems of the research on the washback effect of NMET include lack of innovation, neglect of listening and speaking skills, lack of depth of research, little attention to students -the subject of the test, and neglect of the long-term effect of the washback. Finally, some suggestions are put forward based on the above problems.

A Comparative Study of Vijay Tendulkar’s Kamala and Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House
Gupta, Kanchana

Literature Studies
Vijay Tendulkar’s Kamala, Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House
Vijay Tendulkar is hailed as one of the most influential dramatists in India since the last forty years. He is a prolific playwright with twenty-eight full length plays, twenty-four one–act plays, seventeen film scripts, eleven children plays and a novel in Marathi language to his credit. Many of his plays have been translated into English and other Indian languages. One of his plays Kamala published in 1981 was originally written in Marathi. It was later translated by Priya Adarkar. The play exposes the hypocritical attitude of the society towards women. It draws attention towards issues like the flesh market, the condition of typical Indian women (as portrayal through the characters of Sarita and Kamala), the unsolved discord in the marital lives of Indian couples etc. It also brings to our mind Henrik Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House which was published in 1879. The similarities in both these modern plays are beleaguered by their male characters and lucid imagery but the virtuous female characters here undergo unrelenting anguish. Both present a story of abent husbands who want a wife to behave just like puppet irrespective of whether she is literate or illiterate.
